They get medals for winning the World Cup, along with a parade. Yep, medals. Plus bonuses on top of their regular salary, which isn't much. New Zealand sports players don't get paid anywhere near as much as athletes in the US or Europe. It comes with having such a small economy.
According to an article I've just read, members of the All Blacks team received $150,000 each for winning the competition, on top of the $7,500 per week they were paid for its duration. The same article suggests that the annual salary for a top New Zealand Rugby Union player is around $650,000, or $1,000,000+ with endorsements.
Doesn't sound too bad to me.
That'd be in NZ dollars. And yeah, the amounts themselves aren't that bad for the
top players. For NZers that'd be Richie McCaw or Dan Carter. They're like the Cristiano Ronaldos or LeBron Jameses of their sport, but with much smaller salaries. Actually, I read an article that compares their salaries with that of 2013 OKC Thunder draft pick Steven Adams (also from NZ). Says a lot, really: same salaries but with vastly different profiles in their respective sports.
