LONG ONE AHOY!

The famous "Dewey Defeats Truman" photo was the result of a labor strike and an overly-confident political analyst.

“That ain’t the way I heard it.”

“This is one for the books.”

It was looking like Truman would lose by a landslide, but political analyst and veteran Tribune correspondent Arthur Sears Henning, who had predicted the previous four elections, was so sure of himself that his prediction was set in freaking stone. The tribune’s managing editor was somewhat forced to bite the bullet, because the (proposed) Taft-Hartley labor act was pissing union workers TF off, so they had been on strike.

The papers took several hours longer to print because the regular linotype machine operators weren’t there to carry out business as usual. Their stand-ins were slow AF, and the Tribune just happened to have switched to a new printing method that required the paper to go to press several hours earlier than usual.

Truman went to bed early that night, but woke up to find himself a winner. On his trip back to Washington, someone handed him the paper and he held it up from the back platform of his train. There, a lucky S.O.B. snapped this photo, and the rest, as they always freaking say, was history.

Wolves have a specific howl for mourning.
Agouti is not only a fur color but also an animal with adorable babies.
Baby pigeons, on the other hand...

I think that's how URLs work. If not, then awkward.

Diamonds are forever, and now your data could be, too. Researchers believe they’ve found a way to store information within the flaws of the precious stone by adding and subtracting electrons to create a binary code, and just one, tiny, paper-thin gem half the size of a grain of rice can hold over 100 DVDs worth of data.

London still pays rent to the Queen on a property it leased in the 11th century. Every year, a ceremony is held at the Royal Courts of Justice and the city hands over its annual rent: a knife, an axe, 6 horseshoes, and 61 nails. The price has stayed the same for more than 800 years even though nobody can really remember where the property is.

In the early 1900s, people believed that smoking cigarettes turned you into a homicidal maniac. The belief was so common that ‘cigarette fiend’ became a valid defense for murder, and the term often accompanied an insanity plea.

Despite being a high school dropout, Quentin Tarantino has a 160 IQ, the same as Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein.

Your jeans have tiny copper rivets on the pockets because California Gold Rush miners kept complaining about their denim wearing out. Due to the pockets ripping so easily at the seams, a tailor from Reno patented the metal fasteners to hold them together, and the design is still used today.

Dogs have up to 300 million olfactory receptors. Humans have a measly 6 million.

The ocean looks blue because water absorbs longer-wavelength colors of light more strongly than it does blue. When the sun’s white light enters the ocean, red/orange/yellow light dissipates quickly, and mostly blues remain. That’s why divers stop seeing reds around depths of 20 feet, but blues last until it’s too dark to see.

Randy Gardner is the holder of the scientifically documented record for the longest period a human has intentionally gone without sleep not using stimulants of any kind. In 1964, Gardner, a 17-year-old high school student in San Diego, California, stayed awake for 264.4 hours (11 days 24 minutes).

One of my faves to tell people who don't know is that Hitler was actually a very brave chap during world war 1 where he fought for his country, he was a runner along the trenches, which was one of the most wicked roles you could have, carry messages from dungheap to dungheap dodging all manner of crap and hoping you deliver the message with all your limbs intact. He was injured in his thigh by shrapnel eventually and also got mustard gassed at some point which was one reason he was reluctant to be the first to dump gas on the allies in world war 2, he knew the horrors of war to a great depth, not that it stopped him delivering a grotesque parcel to the world a few decades later... but you can see why he was so affected by germany's devastation after the first war.
