At 5.5 per 100 thousand Lithuania does have a higher murder rate the US (3.9) and higher than that of most of Europe. But its dwarfed by that of the Russian Republic's rate of 9.5. So Lithuania (a former Soviet Republic) is only the highest in Europe if you dont count Russia as being part of Europe ( Russia is usually considered to be part of Europe).

that is probably just because "Berenstein" - with an E - is a much more common spelling than "Berenstain" - with an A. when people's memories on the authors are fuzzy and they do not remember the exact spelling, or they never bothered to pay too much attention in the first place (kids...), they tend to default to the more common, and in this case, wrong spelling when recalling it. with only a one letter difference, i can understand why this happened, but the amount of those people affected is huge...

i feel it's a much more simple and earthbound explanation than "we moved into a parallel universe guise, and everything is totally the same except for these two incredibly specific author's surnames!!".
