I love John Ringo's books. He has a military background and works closely with technical co-authors to come up with highly-believable near-future stories. I buy everything he writes. Here's a great series from him:

I also recommend his "Troy Rising" series, of which 3 novels are out so far:

Another great universe is the 1632 series founded by Eric Flint and fleshed out by many other authors of every discipline. A modern West Virginia mining town is transplanted into 1632 Germany and attempts to bring American ideals to the warring factions of Europe. Careful attention is made to limiting the Americans to what people and technology would likely be in such a town so they don't seem like supermen. Flint encourages fans to join the collaborative effort to write new stories in the universe.

If you love the combat scenes in Star Trek or Star Wars, you're really gonna love the Looking Glass and Troy Rising series. Ringo's stories read like a JJ Abrams film (eg. Alias, the latest "reboot" Trek movie).

Personally, I think the DS9 episode Sacrifice of Angels had surpassed Abrams take upon space combat by orders of magnitude.

Imagine a place where a single thought can bring anything into existence. That is my world.

Firefly, Starhunter 2300 (the level of interplanetary colonization, but not the dystopian nature of society), Stargate Atlantis, Star Trek TNG.

The Third Imperium (c. 1105), with Emperor Strephon Aella Alkhalikoi on the Iridium Throne, with his wife, Empress Iolanthe (ni Guuilbataashullibaa), and their daughter, Grand Princess Ciencia Iphegenia, by his side.

Quote:
"In the year 1105, the Emperor Strephon rules over an empire of eleven thousand worlds. On the far reaches of the empire lies the Spinward Marches, the frontier of the Third Imperium. A crossroads for humans and aliens it is a dangerous place, but for those who dare to cross the abyss between stars, fame and fortune waits."

There, but for the grace of Yaskoydray, go I.

Grandfather is just a Droyne myth, don't you know. But my favorite universe is the same.
