"Hi, Closer," Wraith said. This was turning out to be an interesting day...or days, however you wanted to look at it.

"Is the interface in this room?"

Yes, but the house is continually shifting the dimensions here. I was lucky enough to find it before being expelled back here.

The bizarre monster spoke these things in a groaning rumble that somehow became language when it hit Wraith's brain.

"Even if the Otherworld interface is closed and removed, the house will still be dangerous. But it would be like comparing a house fire to...hmm, what do they call them? Oh yes, an atomic detonation, albeit one that somehow lasts forever."

Mr Oak looked about. If the Otherworld interface was removed, indeed, the house would become less dangerous. But his talk of comparisons of atomic detonations and house fires was actually a little exaggerated. The house would lose much of it's capacity for generating creatures from others' nightmares, but it would still be able to manipulate the reality within....

Wraith nodded. She wanted the house to be less dangerous, very much so. How much longer could she go without some of the figures of her past showing up? Truth be told, she didn't know how well she would bear up in front of some of them.

"How can we destroy it? If the house is this powerful, it's going to have a protection system. When can we destroy it?"

"When?" said Mr Oak. "Possibly sometime never. However, if we can, we can draw its teeth. I'm thinking, should we wait for the other two?"

Wraith nodded. "Yes, I believe we should. Four is better than two, at least in a battle. But how are they going to get here? You said your other guards were beyond your control. And the floor outside this room is not playing nice. I cannot carry more than one person at a time, Mr. Oak. As it is, it's been several years since I've carried a lot. I may not be able to get everyone over one after the other."

She paced restlessly. "If there's nothing following us, then it will work out. If there is, we won't be able to get across. I think, perhaps we should go get them. Waiting does not seem like a good option."

"Fine. I am surprised, Wraith. You have not asked any more questions about my motives or history. Were you saving them for later, or had forgotten them entirely?"

As he asked this, Mr Oak sent a messgae to the Closer.

"Guard this room. If the house attempts to block anything, smash through. I'll pay for the damage, ha ha."

Mythra was about to step out of the door but found herself thrown back into the room. She tried again, for she could see the corridor beyond, but again she was thrown backwards...it was truly as if there were an invisible set of hands pushing her back in each time she stepped within the doorway and she was not amused. Turning back to Roland, she hissed, 'Now we can't even get out!'.

She tried a few more times, and even tried to focus her magic on evaporating whatever it was that was holding herself and Roland inside, but to no avail...it was as if... as if the House had combined all of its energy to create an invisible brick wall. She put her hands on her hips and turned, glancing at what was Gabrielle once... she stopped and looked again. The woman seemed to be positively gloating about something, though what she had to gloat about was anyone's guess.

Mythra took a step towards the creature, eyes burning with a firey rage,

'You!', she said loudly, 'You did this, didn't you? I know this is something to do with you'.
She turned to Roland equally as annoyed, 'You didn't totally seal her in...she has some sort of connection to the house, she must do. Damn, what...', her voice trailed off and she sniffed the air, eyes darting around wildly, as if expecting to see something unusual

'I can smell something I shouldn't be able to smell and don't want to smell', she said softly.
She paused a moment, then went to one of the walls, and lifted her hands up, palms touching the cold stone...except it was no longer cold... in fact, it was unbelievably warm, verging on hot and the temperature within the room was rapidly increasing.

She turned away to look back at Roland, to find her vision now slightly obscured...a fine mist appeared to be forming midair, circulating around. ..the source for that smell.

It was clearly some sort of gas, and just that knowledge alone was enough to send ice into the pit of her belly.

'Roland... '

Suddenly, she heard a soft rumbling sound...an ominous rumbling sound, and shifted her gaze from roland to the wall behind him, which appeared to be moving towards them. Eyes wide, she turned around sharply and looked all around them; all of the walls appeared to be slowly shifting towards them, shrinking the space little by little, but surely.

'ROLAND', she shouted, 'Now what do we do?????! !! !'

"I'm accepting a temporary truce," she said wrly. "I think my concentration has passed more onto the fact that this house is trying to kill us. You haven't done anything harmful - yet, at any rate - and I do try to be honorable. You've helped." She looked at him and shrugged. "Of course, you're more than welcome to share, if you'd like."

"Let's go. I thank you for your trust, as situational and pragmatic as it is. And I think Mythra and Roland may be in danger..."

As they walked through the corridors, nothing seemed to happen.

The house is gloating, thought Mr Oak again....

But outwardly, he started telling Wraith about his life.

"I was born here in England, in the Year of Our Lord 1812. Don't look surprised. When I was 20, my family, in order to flee debts accumulated by my father, emigrated to what is now known as the United States of America, and to the town of Silent Hill..."

Wraith walked next to Mr. Oak. His story was interesting, and once again, she regreted the fact that she couldn't learn about it at leisure. She loved tales. She also made a mental note to tell him some of her story later. It was only fair.

However, she was still on guard, flicking her knife in her hand as she walked. The house was being too quiet. And odd flickers of something kept tugging at the side of her mind. Pain or fear? It was both and neither. She blinked and tried to isolate the feelings. They slid just beyond her grasp. Insanity, she realized suddenly. It's insanity.

She walked a little faster, still listening to Mr. Oak.

Mr Oak noticed the hand flicking at the knife, but continued...

"Silent Hill already had a reputation, especially as a former penal colony. But my family lived there in relative peace. I became a scholar, looking at the implications of Newtonian physics (ah, if only Albert Einstein was around then). But I became interested in the town and the dark religion at its core. Silent Hill was once the most sacred of grounds to the local native tribes. However, the settlers drove them out. I was perhaps the first to realise that the ground beneath our feet was, for want of a better word, alive and sentient. My family was driven to madness and death. I later learned that one of my father's creditors had come to him and tortured them to within an inch of their lives. However, he was also a man of influence, and I was falsely accused of their murder by witchcraft. As I escaped the pursuers, I entered a nearly isolated, and mist-bound part of town. Creatures started appearing, and they would have killed me, if I had not thought less of their actual existence, and more about the fact taht I should escape them. A few of my pursuers, somehow, made it into that world. Only one survived, a woman by the name of Miss Quill...."

((Just so we're clear, Wraith's not planning on using the knife on you. It's against the house.))

Wraith nodded. People were foul - it was not unusual, never had been, never would be - and there were parts of the Earth that made them more so. The doorways into other worlds were rare, but they existed, and the powerful could go through them...

"Miss Quill was a friend of my sister's, and wanted to kill me herself. But after I helped her, she slowly began to realise what had happened. And the creditor managed to make his way into the misty world. His arrival made it even worse, changing it into the Otherworld, a melange of people's nightmarish delusions brought to life by the town of Silent Hill.

The creditor became a creature not unlike the Pyramid Head, and killed Miss Quill. He then managed to bring me out of the Otherworld, and had me tied to a stake, in burned in front of the whole town. I was 32 at the time.

But Silent Hill would not let me die. Instead, I gained existence again. There are many aspects to the town, and one had a more benign face than the others. I became, for want of a better word, the guardian of Silent Hill. My first act was to bring the creditor into the Otherworld. He had some power there, but I had so much more. Needless to say, his demise matched the darkness in his soul..."

((All right, this will be my last post of the evening. I'm sure there will be another three pages by the time I get up in the morning. ;)))

Wraith did not particularly care to picture the man's death. She had not imagined Mr. Oak to be cruel, but she knew what grief could do. She had many questions, but she did not want to stop him.

"For over a century, I helped those who had fallen into the darkness of Silent Hill try to find their way out. Not all succeeded, unfortunately, and they were consumed, or turned into things.

Then, the Cult of Silent Hill grew in power, beginning to be obsessed with human sacrifice. A crazed woman named Dahlia Gillespie had a child called Alessa. She had powers that gave her the title witch, even in the decade of 1970. And her mother wanted to sacrifice Alessa in order to create the Mother of God. Of course, their God is really a demonic thing, not the town of Silent Hill itself, but rather something let through by it. So Dahlia locked Alessa in a burning house. But Alessa, barely, survived. She split her soul in two, and created a baby, Cheryl, from one half. The other half was trapped in her burnt body. The baby was smuggled out of town by a nurse, with my help. But she was caught later, and murdered by a doctor who was a member of the cult. Alessa's spirit in her orignal, charred body, was soothed by me. And I planned for the day when she would have to face being reunited with her other half again, and be a danger to the world...."

Oak then told of Harry Mason, his raising of Cheryl. Of how he influenced Mason and the ghost of police officer Cybil Bennet, who never realised she was dead, having been resurrected by the town and Alessa's influence. Of how Mr Oak tried so desperately to show James Sunderland, another lost soul, the error of his delusions, and how Sunderland managed to walk away from the town with a girl his late wife wanted to adopt. Of how he tried to help those catching Walter Sullivan, when he fled into Silent Hill...
