Butterflies use ants as babysitters. Some caterpillars use irresistible chemicals to attract the ants, which carry them back to their nest and protect them from parasites- but, some of the caterpillars snack on the ant larvae, so the ants change the locks on them by altering the communication chemicals so they can avoid their siren calls in the future.

right, many sharks use oil stored in their liver for a similar purpose.

the ampullae of lorenzini is an organ (or mass of organs) located on the face of many sharks, consisting of jelly filled pores that help the fish to sense electric fields in the water.

There’s an old legend that a birthmark or defect indicates the spot where you received a fatal wound in your past life. In some cultures, people mark their dead with soot or paste so they can recognize them when they are reborn, which has inspired several researchers to spend their lives documenting hundreds of case studies that allegedly reflect this belief.

^So does that mean I was stabbed in the leg or something [since I have a huge birthmark on my leg]? 8O I also have many smaller birthmarks, almost as if they form patterns.

It is a complete myth that Einstein failed math. He was rejected from university because he failed French in his entrance exam. He excelled at math.

The contestants on The Bachelor don’t make any money for appearing on the show. Each woman in the competition has to provide TV-ready outfits for every episode and put her entire life on hold for 6 to 10 weeks. Some go into major debt, cash in their 401Ks, or re-mortgage their homes- but the Bachelor makes about US$100K, and he doesn’t have to pay for the engagement ring.

The loudest aircraft in the world (which is also the world's fastest propeller driven plane) is the Soviet TU 95 bomber, also know as "the Bear" bomber.

Kinda the soviet answer to the America's B52 both it, and its American counterpart, are still flying decades after both went into production in the mid 1950's.

The B52 was originally designed to be a turboprop, but ended up in production as a turbojet. But TU95 was/is in production as a turboprop (a turbo jet with external propellers).

But the Bear is loud for a particular interesting reason: the tips of its counter rotating propeller blades break the sound barrier. Its not just the roar of the jet exhaust. Even though the plane as a whole is subsonic its propeller tips make a constant sonic boom.

There is a large pension plan in the USA, can't recall name...sry  , that is only 13% funded.

Another large pension fund, reduced its payout by 67% recently.

Almost all pension funds in the USA are underfunded...b/c they are based on achieving a 7-8% annual return.

This level of return is impossible with int. rates @ near 0%.

The experts proclaim a pension crisis is very near, but the masses remain oblivious.

No one will react until it's too late, as per usual.

George Washington’s troublesome teeth were made of bone, hippopotamus ivory, human teeth, lead, brass screws, and gold metal wire- but not wood. Only one such set of his full dentures survive today.

That there is a nursery rhyme based on the rather abrasive life of a woman called Mary Ann Cotton who was unfortunately around in the 1800's and had a pitiful penchant for poisoning those around her. She is said to have taken the lives of three husbands and too many children to consider it merely unfathomable. She favoured arsenic and was eventually caught and hung. Anyhow, the grisly rhyme goes;

Mary Ann Cotton
She’s dead and she’s rotten
Lying in bed with her eyes wide open
Sing? Sing? What song should I sing?
Mary Ann Cotton is tied up in string
Where? Where? She’s up in the air!
And now they're selling puddings for a penny pair! :skull:

"A pig in a poke," an expression used to refer to a bad deal, came from the practice of selling pigs in a bag (poke) at fairs. Occasionally, the shyster salesman would surreptitiously place a cat in the bag. When the recipient of the deception opened the bag, the cat would leap out of the bag-in effect, he "let the cat out of the bag"-quite literally.

"Bird brained" does not refer to stupidity-quite the opposite. Many birds are quite intelligent, and become stir crazy in cages-the real meaning of bird brained.

Roger Bannister, the first man to break the four minute mile, also held the record for the shortest time since records began to be ratified by the governing body of track and field. The four minute mile wasn't broken until 1954 because of lack of competition. In the 1920s, Paavo Nurmi of Finland so far outclassed his rivals that record breaking was hindered. By the 1950s, competition had become far more keen, allowing athletes to continue to improve on each other's performances. The three main players in the four-minute mile drama were Bannister, John Landy and Wes Santee.
