the oldest recorded clam, ming, was killed during dating. in order to examine him completely, he had to be opened.

he was 507.

for the most part, birth rates are falling except in the most underdeveloped areas. we might see a plateau, but not before reaching the double digits.

we need to build upwards. not outwards.

Poor clam :( So unnecessary and wasted. Examine a naturally dead clam :x
wow, 507 years old.... Animals are amazing!

Indeed. Downwards would also be a possibility, particularly for some types of businesses. It may have been Isaac Asimov who once made a suggestion in one of his works that people could let the surface be and move underground; not sure how keen I am on that (I'm not an Ocampa lol - and kudos to those who got the reference), but for factories etc it should work fine, and upwards for other things. There are buildings that have residences and workplaces as well as recreational areas in the same large building. That's certainly a possibility, it would also cut down on commute.

Yikes, I once read a sci fi novel by Michael Elder where people were divided into groups. For 8 hours they were at home and slept. When they got up, they went to work for 8 hours, and afterwards they spent time in a recreational space. They couldn't go home before their 8 hours of sleep, because the 16 other hours two other families slept there. 8O

the only thing i worry about when building upwards, is accommodating for the large part of the population that is averse to heights, and of course you have your share of goons who fall off...but that's not the biggest problem.

and of course, there's been a lot of tall projects that have been screwed over because people forgot to check their foundations! 8)

it would be interesting to see how much more surface area the planet would have were the crust thicker and built massive underground caverns...if that wouldn't screw over plate tectonics. :?

maybe a bit more lively...

We might eventually resemble Coruscant if upward growth is the way to go!

(they evidently don't have any tectonic issues on Coruscant as such incredible weight would be undesirable in some areas...)

This topic reminds me of two local things: Some years ago a huge crane came to Oslo to lift something. This was a really huge crane and it was dubbed "monsterkrana" /the monster crane in the news. It was so heavy that it had to stand on something special (no idea what it's called) so it wouldn't sink.

The former Postal Service sorting center in Oslo was Oslo's tallest building until 1990. It is 80 meters tall and has 19 floors. It was built on some sort of pontoon (not sure if that's the right word), because it's too heavy for the ground.
Oslo used to be a swamp, and the entire city is built on mud.

So yeah, not all areas can have very tall buildings.

I would like to live in the Sinnoh region, probably in Floraroma Town instead of one of the big cities.

Would not wanna live near "End of the world" and the holes. Funnily enough, we have a place here too called Verdens Ende!

i saw this monster in the flesh (or wood) just this weekend.

the giant forest is one of the more humbling places i've been to. i would even call it haunting, were it not so full of other people because of memorial day weekend.

Wow! I have never seen a tree that thick or tall. And I thought our pine trees could get tall. I'd love to see a tree like that IRL. Thank you for posting a pic of that wonderful tree, Kip!

Until Aug 2014 there was a fairly tall pine outside my window. Many magpies have had their nests in that tree. It has shielded my room from the sun in summer and it gave my window privacy. Then it got chopped down. They also thinned out so much of the other trees that we see the building on the other side way too well. I hated seeing the tree go and I can't stand not having the green blanket between us. I really liked that natural border, but apparently there are people here dead afraid they won't get to see from their window what their neighbors are having for dinner.

:o if you can believe it, he's actually not the tallest, nor the thickest around the base. just the most massive in terms of volume. each year he grows enough wood for a full sized tree.

he (he?) is actually about 1000 years younger than some of the oldest trees there. those are the perks of prime real estate, plenty of rain, little foot traffic...and fire.

yes, fire!

there, fire works to clear out competing cedars and the like, and expose the sequoia seedlings to the sun where they can grow. there's also an element of serotiny involved, i think fire helps the seeds to split and germinate.

we used to put out and fiercely prevent any fires until we realized we were doing them no favors despite our good intents. now we start fires on purpose...controlled ones.

the true tallest tree is hyperion (sempervirens), pushing the theoretical limit for tree height around 400 feet. there is this picture, but i'm not so sure it's him for his location is a closely guarded secret, like the oldest bristlecone pine.

I knew that fire can actually be beneficial and necessary for some species of trees and even bugs I think, but I didn't know that controlled fires were made to aid them. What an amazing tree in that pic! It looks surreal there it towers over the others... 8) Nature is truly magnificent.
I'm glad they keeping the location of the tree secret. Too many destructive people around.
