I think the psychological trauma of either would be about equal, so I'd opt for the scenario which involved only 10% of the potential losses.

No, that was just an illustration of a general point, which is that it's impossible to conceive of what it would mean to substitute one's consciousness for that of another. If my brain could be transplanted into another person's body, for example, I'd still have the same consciousness of myself as being myself, assuming the operation worked. If I didn't, then it wouldn't be me any longer. This is why reincarnation makes no sense to me.
