I've never heard of örnöttää, your Finnish is going to be better than mine by the time you're done learning! :D

I'm definitely an örnöttääing kind of person, but never knew there was a specific term for it. I'm just going to go ahead and blame my parents for this. This is what happens when they make you spend most of your childhood in countries where people have probably never even heard of summer cottages.

I'm gone for one day and everything is changing around here, Moomingirl is 40 all of a sudden, Krabo seems ashamed of our arthropod lineage and has decided to become a kitten instead and I apparently don't know Finnish anymore. I dread to think what I would come back to if I didn't visit WP for a week. 8O

Who knows, maybe 'ornottaa' means just that -- "to have driven your motorcycle into mud."

Taking a shortcut through the mudflats to get to his Hakarl-Drying Sheds to check on his tasty treats?

Just checked the word under discussion. (copied and pasted). There is no English equivalent given.

Amazing. I knew one could easily make up new English words (as a Scrabble player I know how much we borrow from everyone else's languages) but to find new Finnish words that not all Finns know, that's a bonus! 8)

Sylkat, have you considered taking some pieces of beached West Coast whale home to dry and allow to ferment peacefully for a few weeks? That would give an idea of "hakarl".

She does it all the time. That's why she loves my rotten fish & surströmming videos.

Who knows?? Well, actually dear Krab, I was expecting you to know. If even you don't know these things then how can I be expected to ever learn? You are supposed to be my font of all knowledge.

Yes, me too. Maybe we are the same person. I'm going to think of you as my Finnish Twin now.

You'll get used to Krabo. He does occasionally become a kitten. I quite like it myself.

Don't worry, it will be a long time before I can speak Finnish well. I just read lots of random things about Finland and the Finnish language. Did you not spend your summers in Finland then?

By the way, I liked your Finnish / English mashup producing the word "örnöttääing". :P

Sylkat and Theta.

We don't have a verb for every imaginable situation. Those funny verbs like örnöttää with its lengthy translation are archaic and rural. But if you insist(...)

Okay Kiwi twin! :)

No, we never came back for the summers during the years we were abroad. I also missed the crucial period of learning Finnish winter sports during primary school so I?m really bad at skiing and ice skating as well. :(

I read in the other thread that you?re going away, when are you coming back?

The kitten is definitely an improvement visually, it?s a lot cuter than the crab. I think I was just starting to get used to things being a certain way here and found it comforting and then all of a sudden things weren?t the same anymore. But I guess life is like that. Just have to get used to the fact that things change, and people change, and crabs change. It?ll be okay!

Envirozentinel, what kind of cookies do you have on the dark side?
