Martha is a good replacement for Rose. She's a bit smarter and levelheaded.
The Doctor has plenty of that under his own skull though.
A meeting of the classical and the romantic mindset is a pleasant balance.
In the youtube clips I've seen, Martha just seems a bit cookie-cutter, more like the average pretty/brainy/kick-butt heroine on any contemporary sci-fi or drama show. That persona is so boring to me, so I hope that the clips I've seen don't tell the whole tale. I found the character of Rose to be very complex and very realistic. Quite unlike 'most anything on television these days.
Well, her family is seen in the series, and she tries a few times to get the Doctor interested in her, only to realise that he is still thinking of Rose. Martha really shines in
42, Human Nature/The Family of Blood (she has to put up with racism, and even the Doctor, as a human, is rude to her), and
Utopia/The Sound of Drums/The Last of the Time Lords. In fact,
The Sound of Drums and
The Last of the Time Lords is where Martha really shines. In terms of personality development, I'd say she's a little less complex than Rose, but more complex than Ace (the final companion of the classic series, and who was given more character development than any previous companion).
