'L' is, if you don't know already, SleepyDragon, an eccentric detective from Death Note, an anime about a high school student who finds a notebook that kills the person whose name is written in it. The student, Light Yagami, decides to create a better world in which criminals don't exist, but it becomes clear early on that he will kill anyone who stands in his way. A proxy of L's, Lind L Taylor (really a vicious criminal), is murdered by Light Yagami when his name is written in the Death Note (you can specify the time of death, or you can just leave it and it's just a heart attack. You need a person's name AND face in mind).
'L' is only revealed fully later, and is shown to be an eccentric genius on the level of Sherlock Holmes, eating only sweet foods (he never gains weight, apparently because his brain uses more energy than the rest of his body), and is always crouching (claiming that sitting normally will reduce his thinking ability by 40%). He even picks up things weirdly, usually just by the tips of his fingers and around the edge of the thing.

The guy in this poster doesn't look quite so much like Xan's buddy - the hair is black instead of brown. But the drawings of L sure look like him.

The guy on the right is L, while the guy on the left is Light Yagami. The thing holding the apple behind them (it's hard to make out) is Ryuk, a shinigami (Death God) who deliberately dropped the Death Note in our world, hoping to get amusement. He's Light's, well, ally, for want of a better term, though he says that he is actually not on Light or L's side, but rather just for kicks. Here's another picture of the movie 'L'.
