I hope that you are aware that the dog breed is named after an actual place. The region of "Dalmatia". Humans from the region were called by the same name. And it just so happens that Dalmatia is (more or less) the same piece of land that is now called "Slovenia", which, like Croatia, is part of former Yugoslavia.

Centuries ago the folks who lived in Dalmatia(at the top of the Adriatic near Italy)spoke a Romance language akin to Italian. But over the centuries the place got absorbed into the Slavic speaking part of Europe -hense the name change of the place and the name change of ethnicity of folks who live there. But the spotted dogs retain the ancient name of the place.
