Ivan V of Russia

Older half-brother of Czar Peter I. Since he had serious physical and mental disabilities, Ivan's co-reign with Peter was formal.

Jugurtha, King of Numidia 116-105 BC

Numidia was a North African kingdom comprising parts of modern Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. Jugurtha was involved in a long war against the Romans for much of his reign, but was eventually defeated and captured by the Roman general Sulla, humiliated by being paraded through the streets of Rome as part of Sulla's triumphal celebrations, then thrown into the infamous Tullianum prison, where he died in 104 BC.

NB Numidia is a Latinized form, closely related to the Greek word 'Nomad'.

Kublai Khan

Mongol Emperor of China in 1300's, who hosted Marco Polo.

Louis XVI of France

The last king of France before the French Revolution. Louis XVI was the only King of France ever to be executed. Upon his death, 1000 years of French monarchy came to an end.

The fictional king of Lydia (ancient Turkey) who caused things to turn to gold when he touched them.

King of Sweden and Norway (which were united in a single country for most of the 19th Century) 1844-59. He was in fact French, son of Napoleon's Marshall Bernadotte (who became king of Sweden himself).

Peter the Great, Czar of Russia

Richard III of England

Infamous Shakespeare villain and Brother of Edward IV. Believed to be responsible for the deaths and disappearances of his nephews Edward V and Richard, Duke of York. Fought and was defeated by Henry Tudor at Bosworth Field, the last decisive battle of the Wars of the Roses. Richard's death marked the end of the Middle Ages in England and the rise of the Tudor dynasty.

Stanisław I

Twice King of Poland (1704-09, and 1733-36), but was deposed on both occasions by the Russians. Was also Duke of Lorraine (in France) and Grand Duke of Lithuania.

Emperor Taizong of Tang

He was the second emperor of China's Tang Dynasty, ruling from 626 to 649 and is considered one of the best emperors in China's history.

Ur-Zababa

King of Sumer c. 2300 BC. According to the 'Sumerian King List' he reigned for 400 years, though one must assume that this is erroneous.

Vladislaus II of Hungary

Not only was he King of Hungary and Croatia from 1490 to 1516, he was also King of Bohemia from 1471 to 1516.

Wilhelmina

Queen of the Netherlands 1890-1948. Her reign had been the longest ever for a Dutch monarch when she abdicated in favour of her daughter Juliana. She suffered four miscarriages in her lifetime, and a son was stillborn. She was the first female billionaire (in US$).

King of the Ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia, he had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world by the age of thirty, stretching from Greece to northwestern India He won every battle he fought and is widely considered one of the greatest military commanders of all time.
