Anyone know the properties of CH3CH2COOCH2CH2CH3?

The following is correct, right?

CH3CH2COOH + CH3CH2CH2OH -> CH3CH2COOCH2CH2CH3 + H2O

Also, what would that ester be called?

Not a chemist yet either. I'd just been thinking it would be possible to make an ester with propanol and vinegar. I'm wondering if it would be safe to do so or not and I don't really like trial and ERROR.

Apparently you get propyl ethanoate and water.

http://www.gcsescience.com/o52.htm

Apparently propyl ethanoate is a popular flavouring, to create pear flavour. But it is flammable, with a flash-point of 13-14 degrees Celsius.

So, for God's sake, if you're going to synthesise it, be careful. In fact, if you are going to do so at all, do it at a school or a uni and have someone supervise you.

Thanks. Don't have a school or uni yet, but this would be done on a microchemistry scale if I did. BTW, have you ever tried to titrate vinegar? I always get a lower concentration than I'm supposed to. My guess is that it evaporates from solution quickly, what do you think?

Image

Image made on E-chem by me.

That is propyl ethanoate, which can be made from household chemicals but it isn't the simplest ester. The simplest, I think, should be the product of formic acid and methanol:

HCOOH + CH3OH -> HCOOCH3 + H2O
