It also explains why pepsi is tastier when it's cold...more acid. Maybe equilibria isn't such a pain in the ass after all. ;)

I used to have a microchemistry set when I was 10. my parents bought one for me but never let me use it. Go figure.
I sold it eventually...unopened.

Fusion? nah, Fission is cool.

Fusion is more controllable than fission though. For nuclear reactors using fission you need plenty of failsafes to keep the reaction rate from going out of control.

Advanced Chemistry wrote:
Even though nuclear power plants cannot explode, other nasty things can happen. In a normally operating nuclear power plant, the rate at which the fission processes occur is heavily controlled. If the control operations fail, then the chain reaction starts producing too much energy. This will not lead to an explosion, but it can produce so much heat that everything in the vicinity, including the reactor itself, will begin to melt. When this happens, it is called a meltdown, and the results can be devastating.

...Although nuclear power in the form of nuclear fission can be dangerous and polluting, it is not clear that it is anymore dangerous and polluting than other forms of energy production. There are those who think it is, in fact, one of the safest and cleanest forms of energy production. In France, for example, the scientific community is so convinced that nuclear power is (overall) the safest form of power production that more than 90% of the country runs on electricity produced by nuclear power plants.

If you're referring to the nuclear weaponry that exists today, yes their explosions are cool, but I just hope they aren't used as weapons. Maybe for the Tricentennial of America they can all be launched at White Sands testing range.

I just find something so powerful to be fascinating:

But of course, people use nature for the wrong purposes:

I like a lot of school subjects, if I don't like it, it's mostly because I don't understand it.

Which subjects don't you like?

I don't care for psychology or political "science" whether they have their places or not. I get tired of labels and really I think capitalism and communism should both rot in hell. People should matter more than money AND redistributing wealth is pointless. The rich, if they have earned their wealth should decide where their money goes, but it would be nice if they would share willingly. Needs should be met, but it shouldn't be a forced issue.

When you want to learn something I suggest going to textbook stores or places like Half-Price Books. Never get a book which doesn't teach you the mathematics of the subject; books that lead you along on the conclusion/opinion level can literally say anything they want whether true or false. When you get into details however the subjects get to be seen in a much different light.

The hydrogen bomb is many times more powerful than the atom bomb though. Hydrogen fusion could be used almost indefinitely once we find an efficient way to use it. Uranium is fairly limited compared to deuterium and has toxic byproducts whereas hydrogen fusion produces helium.

I agree. unfortunately in today's world all that matters is money and hoarding money.

Learning something at your own pace seems really appealing, but I really do lack the self discipline to carry it through. When you have the whole world at your fingertips (internet) and still can't get into it, well, then there's not much point trying.

I often think about virtual college, the thought of not having to get up in the morning (or any other time of day :P ) to go somewhere full of people, bad teachers, assignments, oral presentations ( 8O 8O 8O ) and petty exams is really..nice. :D

Unfortunately nowadays a degree really does matter. I'm thinking of going to a shorter-lasting college and getting some tech degree before facing the real deal again. (I've been through two, couldn't complete much of either.) I wonder if it's due to some underlying problem of mine, in which case would need to be fixed before I can continue.

I see...I didn't know about deuterium. 8)

It the destructive powers of fission on the atomic level that fascinate me.

Thing with "learn at your own pace" programs and online college is that it still has deadlines to be kept and thus more stress which prevents you from thinking through your problems and understanding your schoolwork.

I've thought about getting a tech degree so I could afford later college, but I think it would just entrap me into one nitch instead of allowing me to get a full education. Perhaps you could see about reducing your credit/course load. Going at quartertime you would have more time to do the work and understand it, but then it would mean less financial aid too.

Yes, but at least there isn't much of the additional social stress. They have few meetings, maybe once every two weeks or so. I think. Still better than full presence college.

Have you decided what you're going to major in? Something to do with chemistry, perhaps? You could go after some tech degree which will contribute to your curriculum and not limit it. It would further qualify you.

I've thought about this: http://www.saintpaul.edu/academics/prog ... aspx#CLTAD

which isn't a bad idea and would actually cost less. But I eventually want to get an ACS approved chemical education. Thanks for the idea. :)

I want to eventually get a Ph.D. in a field of Chemistry but the transition from here to there still looks very choppy.

So what would you want to learn and do as a career?

Looks cool...go for it. 8) it doesn't impede you from getting a normal degree, and could help qualify you for a job in an area you like to pay through college.

I have no idea. I'm thinking something similar, biotechnology for now. I don't really know.

I feel like taking a few courses here and there, maybe something to do with computing too. (I'm too ignorant in computer matters).

Blueberries, blackberries, and bananas. Made with whole wheat too.

About thirty two more posts to go, I think trigger is watching.
