Well, that's what my grandparents said. But their perceived world was smaller (or bigger, depending on how you see it) so they were likely referring to northern and parts of western Europe. Not what we'd call a world language today.

My grandfather was German; I never met him.

He died.

If not, perhaps I could have learned a bit of the language.

Sorry to hear that Sylkat. I never knew my grandparents either.

Our next door neighbour when I was a child was an old German lady. She spoke almost no English, it must have been hard for her. She was nice though, she would give us bones for our dog. I would have liked to be able to talk to her and hear her story. As it was we had to make do with gesticulations and smiles.

I'm sorry you never knew your grandfather, Sylkat! I had a close relationship with my maternal grandparents, but I only met my paternal grandmother a few times, and I never met my paternal grandfather. In my case he wasn't much to meet unfortunately. He was an abusive alcoholic and he died a few years after I was born.
I hope you grew up being told stories about him at least.
I've always enjoyed it so much when my mother or my grandparents told me stories from their childhood or younger days.

Moomin, that must have been a lonely existence for the German woman. I heard a story once about a woman who emigrated to the US and when she grew old and senile she forgot English. She could only remember Norwegian and no one was able to understand her. I felt so sorry for her just hearing about it, imagine being that alone...
My grandparents' neighbor was a widow with an adult son. She was supposed to move in with them, but then he landed a good job in the States, and they moved there for a while, with her. She didn't know any English so she was miserable there, despite living with her family.

Hmmmmm....

Sort of like Autistics and Aspergians; surrounded by people, yet cannot communicate?

Maybe that's why I always liked her.

Skilpadde, we have quite a large Indian community here. I always feel sorry for the ladies, a lot of them don't speak English at all. They have their 'Indian social club', so at least they get to talk to each other, but it must be hard so far from home, not speaking the language.

Hadn't heard of cornbread. Had to look it up. Might have to try to make that sometime. Thanks Sylkat, you're an education. :D

Note: Since adding an international keyboard (which shifted my shift key along a bit) and switching off spellcheck (it got too confused, and never knew which language I was typing) my messages tend to go all over the place. I tried to type the above and the last half came out in Cyrillic text. Like this:

Дшлку рун Вгэдфг. 8O

(No that doesn't mean anything, it's me typing as usual and not noticing the keyboard has switched)

More like 'rune', than 'run' I think, but my Russian is still pretty sketchy.

Or whatever language it was Krabo said I was learning. :?

^ Didn't he say Ukrainian?

Thanks a lot, Moomin and Sylkat. Now I'm in the mood for Indian cuisine too, but that's not what we're having today. We're having Korma tomorrow though. But then you're no doubt talking about another food I want...

Haha, who mentioned Biryani? (And made me long for Indian food too). Grr...

Well, in some 12-14 hours I'm having Korma! :P

Am I starting any now?
