Ki nodded at Mars' description of Mars. "Sounds like a very harsh place."

When they heard Mars say pressure, Ki tilted their head, curious. "I'm not familiar with this concept called pressurization. Do you think you might be able to explain it to me?"

They grinned. "Ever seen any heads explode?"

Mars thinks for a moment about how to explain pressure in as simple terms as possible, thinking back to when his parents were first describing why he can't go outside without a pressure suit while at the same time trying not to make it too condescendingly simple. "Well, you can think of it as the amount of air crammed into a given area. In outer space there is no air so the pressure is zero but here we have air around us so we are under pressure. It is possible to cram a lot of air into a small area which makes it very high pressure, but if the air is released it will escape and become the same pressure as the surrounding air. Liquids also need pressure to exist, without it they either become a solid or a gas. Needless to say that causes problems for carbon-water based life like humans because our blood needs to be a liquid to do it's job and that is before getting into how we need air to live. That is why on Mars we have buildings that can hold in high pressure air so that we can live there. The same is true for space ships, they need to hold in air and be under pressure so that people can live inside of them. To explain more I would have to start going into the math of it."

When Ki asks if he has ever seen someone's head explode he replies "No, it is a myth on Earth that taking off your helmet in space will make your head explode but that's not true. Really it's more like their eyes turn red, their veins become very visible, and they become frozen. The only thing that might explode is the lungs if they try to hold their breath." He begins to look sad as if he is remembering some bad experience. "And yes, I've seen that happen."

Bump.

Ki listened and nodded to Mars' explanation. "I... think I've heard of that before," they nodded. "That's what causes altitude sickness, right? The change in air pressure?"

"...Oh, I don't mind if you get into the math of it," they insisted. "I'm not a math person, but I'll follow."

Ki seemed a bit disappointed when he said people's heads didn't explode. They had a slighty... unsettling grin as he described how people's eyes turned red and they became frozen, "That sounds exciting to see."

Mars replies "Yeah, it is what causes decompression sickness. Well, kinda... It's mostly caused by there not being a lot of oxygen around because oxygen is kinda' necessary for all animals to survive but that is caused by the pressure being low."


"Well, I'm not really a math person either but here goes. Pressure is measured usually by Pascals or atmospheres, Pascals are the amount of force the air applies to a surface of a given size and atmospheres is based on the sea level pressure of Earth's atmosphere such that 2 atmospheres is twice the pressure on Earth and half an atmosphere is half the pressure on Earth. On Mars our habitats are pressurizes to a bit under one atmosphere while the air on the surface of Mars is about one 500th of an atmosphere."


"It is when it's someone you don't like." he says, trying to lighten up the mood a bit.

Kurea opened her small mouth as if to speak, but all that came out as she looked around at everyone was 'Meijyn? Magardi? Kurea Ai."

When Mars was in the middle of explaining, Ki pushed him out onto the balcony into the middle of the pouring rain. He was immediately drenched, and his green hair became plastered over his eyes like strands of seaweed.

They burst out laughing. "Hahaha, gotcha!"

They stopped laughing, however, when they realized that they were getting completely soaked as well. Their black hair was plastered over their face in a mat, and their shirt was completely soaked through. "Eugh... Hahah... man, this is worse than I thought." They pinched out a section of their shirt with their thumb and grimaced. "Yikes, I shouldn't have worn my nice shirt today." They slicked some hair out of their face. "Whew!"

Ki bent over the railing and squinted down at the sidewalk, which was visible from the balcony. They were only about six feet off the ground. "Say, that's a pretty low jump, do you think we could make it?"

After Mars gets over the initial surprise and slides his hair away from his eyes he sees that Ki had gotten wet too he lets out a laugh.

He looks down at the sidewalk as Ki mentions trying to jump down, his first thought is that it would be easy but then he remembers that he is not on the planet Mars any more and that the gravity here is much stringer then what he is used to. "Well, I don't know. I am not used to this much gravity..." he says before getting a daring grin. "After you."

Laura, who had gotten a frilly parasol out of her bag when it started raining to shield her from the possibility of getting wet, grinned brightly."I wanna go, I wanna go!" She shouted, cheerfully skipping up to the balcony.

While they were talking, Guinan helped herself to a piece of birthday cake. She laughed as Ki pushed Mars out the door and Laura followed. "They'll be back real soon," she predicted.

Soon after Laura, Mars, and Kiki ran off, Lucy followed while dragging a seemingly terrified Kimmy. "We're going wherever Laura's going!" Lucy shouted

Kurea and Aleta decided not to follow, as they were much more interested the birthday cake. Kurea sniffed the chocolate one tentatively, but then made a face.

Ki peered cautiously over the rail. Luckily the front lawn was covered in leaves, so that would make for a soft landing. It was hard to see the leaves below as it was extremely dark out, and it was further obscured by the torrential sheets of rain which was pouring everywhere.

The wind was blowing rain in their face, and lightning cracked in the distance. Ki grinned. "Ah, it's okay. I'll be there to catch you when you fall. Or not." Then they jumped off the balcony. "Alley-oop!" There was a splash of leaves as they landed down below, and leaves and grass got tangled in their hair as they rolled forward to soften their landing. They straightened back up. "Wahaha! What a thrill!"

Ki smirked up at Mars with a triumphant expression. "Now you try, you coward!"

Lychee rolled their eyes as everyone else decided to run outside. "There's no way I'm going outside," they said distastefully.

They wrapped their arms around themself, as if to shield themself from the cold. "I-I'd much rather stay inside, where it's nice, and warm, and there isn't any bugs or rain..."

"A-and I've got video games and Internet!" they added.

"Yeah, you're tellin' me." replies Mike to Lychee, remaining inside the house.

Coward, ayy? thinks Mars as he climbs over the railing surrounding the balcony. One he lets go he begins falling a bit quicker then he was expecting so he lands rather awkwardly and falls over into the leaves and grass. "Oww... Yeah, I'm probably gonna' feel that for the next hour." he says, getting up and limping slightly.

"CANNONBALL!!!1!" Laura shouted as she leaped off the railing, clutching tightly at the umbrella that would hopefully slow her fall. It unfortunately didn't, only folding in upwards before she landed cleanly on her feet, only to stumble clumsily backwards, falling hard on her butt. In blind panic, Laura rushed inside to keep her hair or dress from getting wet or dirty, trying not to slip and fall again on the slippery, fallen leaves that covered the ground.

Irene led Clone Laura across the street, when that familiar shade of pink caught her eye. She paused to watch her, and smiled. "Be glad you won't end up like her." The redhead stated, before tighting her grip on her wrist and continuing to go about what they were doing.
