Did someone say Cookies? :D

Hi everyone, thanks for your concern. I'm okay, I've just been very busy with life and languages. I usually respond to PM's, and emails for those of you that have it.

By the way Theta, I live very rurally. And although NZ is generally very safe, we do get earthquakes, and I do live on top of a volcano. I'm pretty sure if either of those things happened though, you would hear about it on your news. ;)

Ah okay. This is one of the best cookies I've ever had:

Unfortunately I only had it when I was in NYC. The only Oreo they have ever sold here is the one with the boring white fill.

Happy Waitangi Day, Mooms. Hope you've had a nice day ... or at least a pleasantly quiet one.

I had Māori boil-up and fried bread with my family and cousins. They hold Waitangi Day celebrations over here each year, because my city here in Oz has over 40,000 Kiwis living in it. :P Most of my family will be going, but I'll be staying home this year.

I wonder why British people call cookies 'biscuits'?

I wonder if New Zealanders do that.......

Here we call them either, but biscuits more often since in days gone by the UK influence was stronger. But nowadays there tends to be a tendency to copy the US.

Afrikaans people refer to rusks (which are usually dunked in tea or coffee) as beskuit. These don't seem to be very well known in the US. But parts of the US seem home to many oddities, such as bacon with ice cream, and chocolate coated chips. (french fries).

To further confuse matters, crumpets are known as flapjacks in the States.

^ Same here in Aus and NZ: we use both words, but "biscuits" would be more common. We just tend to follow the British most of the time, but a few American words have crept in more recently – e.g., we use both "lift" and "elevator", although you generally see "lift" on signs. A few words here are different from both the US and UK, such as "footpath", which is a sidewalk (US) or a pavement (UK). I find it all really fascinating.

But I thought flapjacks were pancakes. I tried looking it up on Google, but honestly it ended up making me hungry.

Flapjacks are a kind of pancake but smaller and thicker than regular pancakes: you fry about 4 at a time.

Time I made some pancakes again... so nice with cinnamon sugar and a dash of lemon.
