These are small crystals in your ear that, if moved from their normal positions, can cause Benign Paroxsymal Positional Vertigo. I had this a few years ago for about a month. Each episode only lasted about 10 seconds to a couple of minutes and in the earlier episodes it felt like we were having a very violent earthquake. All it took was to shift my head.

It was interesting to me that the worst BPPV episodes started while I was sleeping. The first time it hit, I had fallen asleep in my office chair and all of a sudden, the chair was doing its very best to throw me off while I held on just as tight as I could. It also woke me up while sleeping in bed on a few occasions.
