I'm pretty sure it is. It probably started when someone was trying to type owned really fast so as not to be distracted from the game. He or she then probably pressed enter, or send. And then it was in the chat section of the game as: pwned.

Yes, but 'o' is next to 'p' on most keyboards. 'Ownage' was a term to denote complete dominance of a game, and in haste, would probably be misspelt often. Hence 'pwnage'......
