dunno if much care for ivrit, but "i have a turtle" would be said like יש לי צב. :D or "yesh li tsav". not entirely sure of the word means both turtle and tortoise, i think it does.

'to have' is a very basic verb to us, but many languages outside of Europe do fine just without it, or find ways to work around it. yesh means roughly "there is", spanish hay, l- meaning "to" and the i ending for "me"....or "there is to me [a] turtle".

there is a negative counterpart, eyn, in case אין לך צב. :(

I've learned a new word today: "ivrit". :)

I have to get back to you as well, Mooms.

...

A couple more languages for "I have a turtle":

Japanese: を飼っています。 ("kame o katte imasu")
Korean: 거북이를 기르고 있어요. ("geobugi-reul gireugo isseoyo")

Both languages have several ways of saying "to have", depending on the situation. Here, both sentences literally mean "(I) am raising a turtle" – but that's just how they usually say it when it comes to animals.

Thanks for the always informative post!

Mooms is scarce lately as she's been having difficulty posting posts. I hope the problem's getting sorted as it is naturally discouraging when she makes 20 unsuccessful attempts to post....

Let's drink to her patience.

She might be having the same problems on her iPad that I had on my iPhone. On my phone I have to constantly log in, and I still can't post. In my case, I just gave up using the site on my phone and now I just use my laptop. But that may not be an option for her; if that were the case for me I'd probably stop trying, too. :(

Hope she makes it back at some point.

She might have to consider smoke signals again, as she did a while back;

The New Zealand Forest Rangers were apparently not too understanding, though.

never seen possession like that before....do they have other ways when it comes to non-animate objects, ideas and abstractions?

i'm having that same trouble when logging in on mobile, as well...i get logged out after about 45 mins to an hour of not posting or actively browsing, the rate of more frequent it seems when i try to access mod areas, but that does make some sense. for me it's a lot better thankfully on desktop and laptop but yeah, some other members that rely on desk and laptops have the logging in problem too.

embarrassing. and the lack of any resolution or heads-up regarding ranks and avatars for months now. one member reported logging in as somebody else as a glitch...one of the more top-priority problem stuff IMO, compared to more lowbrow issues like the color of the report button, which is still valid, but not like logging into somebody elses account...

That's just how they say it when it comes to "having" animals (i.e., as pets). But yeah, there are other ways of saying "to have" in both languages. For example, if you have something in your possession (e.g., I have a pen), then Koreans say 가지고 있다 ("gajigo itda") and Japanese people say 持っている ("motte iru") to mean "have".

But like you mentioned about Spanish, both Japanese and Korean use "there is" a lot where English uses "to have". For example, in English we'd say "I have a younger sister", but in Japanese and Korean they'd say "(as for me) there is a younger sister". In Korean the verb for "there is" is 있다 ("itda"); there are two such verbs in Japanese – いる ("iru"; for animate objects, such as people and animals) and ある ("aru"; for everything else, including abstract ideas). And like Modern Hebrew, Korean also has a separate verb for "there isn't", 없다 ("optda"); the Japanese verbs are just conjugated into negative form as normal.

It'd be interesting to see how these kinds of basic verbs (have, is/am/are) are handled in other languages.

Eesh, you've got all this to worry about on top of being a senior. 8O And yeah, I think a lot of people would appreciate more regular feedback from Alex. Even if they're still having trouble fixing long-standing problems, at least a regular heads-up would make people less ... frustrated.

I don't know if maybe someone has tried this already, but after realizing afresh that this mobile / apple issue is the reason why we see less of some good friends, I started a thread in the Wrongplanet.net support subforum asking about that. I hope anyone who's having trouble will tell Alex and the people running the site more about the problem there, so we can make it friendlier for your devices. :)

Skilpadde, if you want to say "I have a turtle" in Italian, it is "Ho una tartaruga". If you want to say "I have a lot of turtles" it would be "Ho molte tartarughe". :D (I don't know how many you have). I think Finnish would be "Minulla on kilpikonna" but you would need to check with the Krab. Finnish is still incredibly confusing to me, although I've found a new online course with a man who explains things very well, so I'm hoping it will make more sense soon.

How would you say "I have a turtle" in Norwegian? I should start now, and "to have" is one of the most important verbs. :)

Moomingirl, sorry for the delay. My keyboard has been malfunctioning.
Thanks for letting me know about the phrase “I have a turtle” in French, Italian and Finnish. Sadly, I do not have any turtles myself anymore. Turtles are illegal here. I hate that law with a vengeance :wall: If only we could join EU, then they’d have to relent that barbaric law (yeah, it’s barbaric, because when illegal pets are found, they are killed regardless of whether or not they are well treated, plus it makes people fear seeking vet help for their pets).

Let’s talk about nicer things, please! More about pure turtle stuff!

How to say it in Norwegian? Jeg har en Skilpadde (I have a turtle).
Å ha = to have
Har= have/has (we make no such distinction, there is only one word for I/you/he/she have/has
Jeg hadde en Skilpadde = I had a turtle
Jeg har hatt en skilpadde = I have had a turtle.

Kip and Murihiku, thank you both for telling me about how to say it in Hebrew, Japanese and Korean! I collect words and phrases about turtles, and I like picking up a bit in different languages, so I appreciate it! :D

Hello dear Skilpadde, I'm not sure where Moomingirl has got to lately: seems to have hibernated to her secluded valley for the time being. Hopefully we'll see her again on the boards soon.

Hello, dear Enviro, I hope she'll be back soon too. She did mention that she wouldn't be as much on as she has been...
I bet she's hibernating in the Moomin Valley with all the other Moomins, which must mean she follows the winter of the northern hemisphere rather than the southern... Considering there being summer (well autumn I guess) where she lives, that can only be seen as true blue dedication to the Moomins.

Moomingirl, when you come back here I hope you'll enjoy this little cutie:

wait, i just realized...i may have gotten the meaning of 'raise' wrong when you first brought it up as posession, you meant "raise" as in "care for"?? crap, i thought you meant raise as in "lifting up", "elevating"... (or, lifting up and raising his quality of life by caring for him?)

more ivrit turtle posession? affixing to של (shel - of) after something is one way to mark possession:

צב שלי (tzav sheli) - my turtle

צב שלנו (tzav shelanu) our turtle

צב שלו / צב שלה (tzav shelu/tzav shela) his turtle/her turtle....google translate translates these as "it's" turtle  i just use it to type the alefbet.

צב שלך (tzav shelakh/tzav shelkha) - your turtle [f] your turtle [m] respectively...spelled the same when unpointed.

צב שלכן / צב שלכם (tzav shelakhen/tzav shalekhem) your (plural) turtle [f] your turtle [m]

צב שלהם / צב שלהן (tzav shelahem/tzav shelahen) - their turtle [m] their turtle [f]

multiply the shelled critters by suffixing -im to tzav. :jester:

יש לנו הרבה צבים בסנטה ברברה - אם הם צריכים

Skilpadde i NEVER would have guessed turtles would be banned over there! eesh...has it always been like that? alex seems to have trouble fixing bugs himself but has asked for help, that's a really good sign in my eyes!

how about sullen looking baby birds?

Skilpadde, I am so sorry to hear that. :( Thanks for the gorgeous picture of the puppy though! :)

I'm having terrible trouble posting here. To be honest I've pretty much abandoned coming here, it's too frustrating to read your posts and not be able to post myself.

I miss you guys! I hope they sort out the issues soon. In the meantime if anyone wants to PM me I can pass on my email if you want to keep in touch.

Take care guys.

Edit - holy moly, it posted first time. Either things are looking up, or it's a glitch. :P

We've missed you, too. And yeah, it would be really frustrating to read threads and not reply to them.

So you've been able to send a couple of posts today. That's a nice start. :) Hopefully you didn't have too much trouble posting them, so you might be able to send more.

Yeah, "raise" as in "care for". I was actually wondering why you thought it was unusual, at first. Now I get your question, though.

BTW, are you still working on your conlang? You seem to be interested in different grammatical constructions a lot. The Hebrew ones you gave were really interesting. :)
