You're Thinking of Motor Week, produced by Maryland Public Television. It's still on the air.

Smokey and the Bandit.

Henry Mancini or Elmer Bernstein?

GOSH :o that is TOUGH! each were kings of their own realm. for me, the edge goes to glenn miller's one-time arranger, henry mancini. he has a bit of glenn miller in him, and a bit of nino rota, and a generous dollop of versatility.

conductors-
fritz reiner
or
leonard Bernstein?

No contest here. Lenny. Especially the NY Philharmonic recordings of the Mahler Symphonies, Especially the Eighth, as well as his recordings of Richard Strauss' tone poems and his opera Der Rosenkavalier. Lenny at least tried to educate his audiences. In addition, he was influenced by his mentor, Bruno Walter, and was on a first name basis with the members of the Philharmonic.

Reiner, from what I read about him, was a flat-out SOB. Most of the members of the Chicago Symphony, lived in fear of him.

Andre Previn or Seiji Ozawa?

I think he wanted you to pick between: "Andre Previn or Seiji Ozawa", Aunty. I can't answer him, but maybe YOU can.

I cannot choose between andre and seiji, both are masters of their respective realms.

and I prefer hidef 60 frame per second video, so I guess that would be television. I never cared for films with their grainy juddery 24 frame per second antiqueness.

which clarinetist-
pete fountain
or
Sidney bichet?

Never heard of Bichet. I'm not fond of Pete Fountain. So I say neither.

Robert Shaw or Margaret Hillis?

have not heard any material by the latter, and the former's arrangements sound to me a bit stodgy, in general.

whose band conducting do you prefer-
Donald Hunsberger
or
Frederick Fennell?

I was considering both as choir directors. Robert Shaw is obvious, Margaret Hillis was director of choral studies at Northwestern University and also directed the Chicago Symphony Chorus (of which I'm still kicking myself in the arse for turning down singing with that group.)

As for Fennell and Hunsberger, that's a tough one for me, since both directed the Eastman Wind Ensemble. If you would have included Revelli from the University of Michigan, I would have chosen Revelli, since I played under him in 1976 when he conducted the National High School Honors Band.

Jack Stamp (composer and soon director emeritus of the Wind Ensemble at Indiana University of PA) or Gary Ziek (composer and director of bands at Emporia State University, Kansas, and a former classmate of mine at IUP) (hint, both conductors are IUP graduates)

Jack Stamp or Gary Ziek? (I should have made that clear in my last post, since they are both well known as composers of wind band music)

have not heard Ronnie verell ["animal"] but would have to prefer just about anybody to buddy rich who [I've chatted with musicians who had to work with him] was by all accounts a total SOB. I cannot separate rich's technical excellence from his abominable personality. and besides that, chick webb could [had he survived] drum him under the table any day of the week.

drummers-
buddy rich
or
gene krupa?

[btw, each thought the other to be the best]
