And Australia is basically Britain's "USA 2.0", after having lost the Thirteen Colonies in the Revolutionary War.

Now this is a very interesting idea. I have never before come across it. Worth considering.

The timeline fits, at least:

1776: The Thirteen Colonies declare their independence.
1783: The Revolutionary War ends with Britain formally relinquishing their American colonies.
1788: The first British colony is established in Australia.

You can't help but feel a little like you're "Plan B" here in Oz. :P

I think plan C is to keep expanding Gibraltar by reclaiming land from the sea till it gets big enough.

What is there at the end of Plan C? Keep filling the gap until Gibraltar meets Morocco, then ask Morocco join the EU?

Well, a land bridge would cause the Mediterranean Sea to slowly dry up, as it can't make up for evaporation with its own precipitation alone. That should yield a lot of new land available for conquest
