Hah! I'd forgotten my avatar isn't a solid snowman. It's a Unicode snowman with the strokes made of ice, hanging there in the middle of the fog. The ice is transparent, but I somehow rendered the image with a black background seen only with those backward rays shot from the point of view which are refracted by the ice. The contribution of rays which hit the background directly, without travelling through the ice, was correctly stored as transparency.
