Yeah, they did. There was a clear majority favouring the old flag over the new one in the lead-up to the referendum, although the final result was a lot closer than I expected: 56.73% supporting the old (current) flag, and 43.27% for the new design.
I didn't mind one way or the other, although if another referendum is held in the future I'll submit a new design of my own. When that might be is anyone's guess. I'd say after Queen Elizabeth II's reign ends, when the idea of New Zealand becoming a republic will probably start gaining a lot more support.
