Kuraudo, I also like the page on misfits and loners from that site too, saying that a whole lot of stuff that makes people different is actually more common than we realize. And it mentions Twilight as an example of how actually, Bella wouldn't be that unusual in a big city:

^Yes indeed-y. I often have trouble actually giving my characters faults; or if I do succeed, the faults are ones that I have.

Just for fun I ran Michael Watt through that and got a fairly low score of 16. I got a lot of De-Suifiers from the whole thing about his position of power and the fact that people hate him both being because of things he did that he's not proud of, and his whole internal debate about weather he is even on the right side. Without that my score is 31 mostly because of things like his robotic arm, his position as the co-CEO of a big tech company, and his assistant bot that follows him around.

One trick to making characters believable is to make them idiosyncratic and quirky.
