Wastelands ~ The Game's afoot
"So basically this thing was becoming one and a half dogs?" Staring at the jars Virgil gulped "It seems too deliberate - everything mutating to make extras. And that bit about the brain changes scares me." Breaking out in a sweat Virgil added "It's almost like it was enginnered to be a weapon." Pacing he asked the most important question yet "What caused this?"

"Buggered if I know. But if this was engineered, then who did it is perhaps more important than what. If it was engineered using a vector virus, we should be relatively safe. Most viruses are picky about the cells they infect, although the Bernice Summerfield Main Law of the Universe says that anything not specifically designed to hurt you will find a way. Put simply, the buggerance factor of the world tends towards a maximum. But I don't know whether it was some sort of freakish congruence of genes mutated by fallout and toxins, simple slap-in-a-virus and see what happens engineering, or deliberate tinkering gone extremely wrong. But remember, we've only found one of these. Any others of this..um....species may have different anatomy. We simply do not know. Anyway, I'll put these in the analysis machines and go to bed. It's been a long day."
As he put the tissue samples into the jury-rigged analysers, he knew that that was not the only reason why he needed to get out of their. The smell of that thing excited the drums, and now they seemed to be goading him, onwards, to kill Virgil. And there may come a time when he may have to remove himself from this place before things got really out of hand.

((He's worried, in other words, that he is going insane. He might have to remove himself from the bunker before he kills the inhabitants. But Virgil and the others don't notice anything of that magnitude, he just seems to act as if he has a bad headache))

"Alright man, I looked at our vehicles and got them running again, I think we should go out and check the landscape for survivors and more mutant animals." Yawning himself he started towards his room with a mild sense of paranoia. "Oh yeah, before you hit the sack. Inject a rabbit from the food growing facility with some of the blood from the dog and leave it in a cage in the medlab - should tell us if this deliberate genetic f**kery."

Sydney blinked at Virgil as he left. The guy knew his way around computers and technology of all kinds, but he knew SFA about how genetic engineering worked. Nonetheless, he picked a rabbit and injected it. He put it in a larger cage than usual (just in case) and left it in the lab. Under normal circumstances, though, it would take a few days for things to change. Then it occurred to him. There was only one thing that could accelerate such effects. He knew that normally they would be primed for each animal, but it was possible to have a zoonotic effect if the restrictions failed. He typed in a lockdown sequences and activated some countermeasures for NBC effects, as well as....the other option. It was probably too late, but the most encouraging thing was was that if that option would have occurred, Virgil, Alan and the Colonel would already have changed by now.....

Saldana pulled his dark green military fatigues on, and headed up to the canteen to get some food. Some toast and egg would do, some more eggs had been taken out of the deep freezer room from sublevel 6 and brought up here. Not as good as real eggs, but they would do. They needed a new supply of food, preferably live animals and plants this time, which could be bred here. Though untainted animals must be hard to come by. There were oat seeds, wheat seeds, tomato seeds, strawberry plant seeds, orange seeds, potato seeds, and deep frozen embryos, and other things, but they would take months to grow when they were taken out of the freezer. They also needed more gas to keep the generator running for more than 10 months, though they could use a wind turbine, if they could find one, for an infinite supply of power.
He cooked the food, had his breakfast, and walked up to the comms room, not wanting to go anywhere near the medical facility after he just had breakfast. No-one was there, and instead he headed up to the library, on sublevel 3. He was into reading, though Sydney seemed a little surprised each time he saw Saldana up there, perhaps fitting him with a macho, ignorant brute military stereotype. Pfft.
The colonel took a history book from one of the shelves, all about the Cuban missile crisis, and sat down on a comfy chair in the corner.

OOC: Sorry I wasn't on yesterday but I had to go to an orientation for highschool and when I got back I had to go to bed. I didn't know I'd be gone for 3 hours.
"Lets see....just have to do this one more thing and the computer is fixed....There! Got it!" Alan said as he finished work on the computer. "I've been working on this thing for a few hours but I fixed it!" He pressed a button in the room that the computer was in and said. "Hey everyone. Uhh the compute that lets us use the visual equipment and the other sensors that were to be place outside is now fixed. The equipment can be used now."
He then left the room to go fix himself a meal. He ate it and then went to bed. His bedroom was a small room, a small shelf for books a four poster bed, an area where his miniatures were at (posed in a way that looked like the Space Marines were attacking Imperial Guardsmen), and a drawer where is other belongings were stored.
((I don't have to go but it's just that after working on a computer for a long time and staying up for an indefinite time can really make you tired.))

Virgil woke from a nightmare ridden sleep, spending a good five minutes rubbing his eyes before even crawling out of bed. In some ways Virgil's personality made his room look completely wrong. It was full of books on philosophy and stuffed with novels. And the floor was covered in a thick black shag carpet with ethnic rugs.
He put on his mechanics uniform with slow, precise movements and slid his Mauser in the holster. An old leather one covered in japanese words. Deciding to check on the rabbit on the medlab in curiosity he remembered last night and slapped his head in stupidity - why the hell inject the rabbit? Virgil hated how tiredness could f**k with his head.
Entering the medlab quietly and carefully (He didn't want to be attacked by mutant Bugs Bunny if thats what happened to it). The room was dark, but that was too be expected since no one was inside and it was rarely used. Fumbling around the room he found the lightswitch and managed to filp it.
Virgil turned a sickly white at what he saw and nearly fainted, slamming the comm button with his fist he barely managed to put out the words "Get to the medlab." before he kneeled over and vomitted.
((I'll let the next person decide what happened to the rabbit, increasing the horror factor for our audience also.))

Alan woke up when he heard the intercom state Virgil's message. Why the hell do we need to head to the medlab dammit... Alan thought to himself as he got dressed. He headed to the medlab and inside he saw Virgil trying to recover from his expulsion of soon to be processed foodstuffs all over the floor where he was. Then he looked up and saw IT.
Alan stood still for a few seconds and yelled, "HOLY SH**! !" It was a monster that had little resemblence to the cute little bunny it once was. It had long sharp claws protruding from where it's paws were at. Fangs protruding from it's mouth and many sharp teeth inside of the mouth. It was about 3/4's the size of the mutated dog and it had a few growths on its body from which many eyes stared at the two people and from which were mouths opening and closing as if gasping for breath.
The monster started to rush towards Virgil but Alan grabbed him, dragged him out of the room and locked the medlab entrance. The monster started to beat against the door trying to break free so it could hunt down its prey. Just before it broke through Alan yelled on the intercom system, "There's a monster in the medlab!! Get down here quick! F**K!! IT'S ABOUT TO BREAK THROUGH THE DOOR!!" Then on the intercom you could heard the sound of metal being smashed and glass breaking. The message ended.
Alan and Virgil were about to die but luckily they hid in a closet right before the monster broke through. But they wouldn't be able to hide for long...

Virgil was only vaugely aware of his outside enviroment, he was stuffed in a closet with someone and something big and disgusting wanted them dead. It worked enough Virgil to feel a mild sense of terror, he desperatly tried to pull his Masuer from the holster but in his terror he accidently fired a round as he drew - hitting himself in the leg.
Screaming, he fired his gun into where he thought the rabbit mutant was - but it only enraged it.

((Why did you people have to be so stupidly cliche? The most shocking thing would've been if either nothing happened at all, or the bunny died. But no, you had to make 'attack of the Lovecraftian rabbit'. That is cliche. And now I will have to deal with it))
Sydney woke to the scream of Alan on the intercom and the wail of the alarm. That could only mean one thing. He grabbed at a hidden drawer and pulled out a strange metal tube with a wire framework. Had Virgil and the others seen it, they would have thought it an elongated egg whisk.
He pelted down the corridor and entered the medlab corridor. The horrific creature turned to him. The final piece dropped into place. He looked at it.
"Hey, bunny. Come here."
Ready to fire if it pelted along the corrdor, Sydney watched as it merely loped down towards him, gently, a strange gasping noise emanating from it. It looked at him with eyes growing along its body, horrific slitted eyes that yet seemed to show something other than rage or hunger.....
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
Sydney clicked a lever on the device and fired. A blast of blue energy hit the mutated rabbit, and as it spasmed, the air around it flared from positive to negative. The rabbit slumped to the ground. But the panting noise remained.
Sydney heard noises from a nearby supplies closet, and opened it. Virgil and Alan were in it, weapons at the ready. They stared at the mutated rabbit.
"You left it alive?" Alan yelped incredulously. ((Sorry for the godplaying, I need someone to say this))
Sydney glared at them. "'It?'The poor thing. It was scared, don't you understand? It was scared." He then started to drag it back down into the medlab. He was going to need a LOT of carrots...
((Don't worry people, I've got an explanation ready. I just didn't want this to be a cliched monster story. EDITED to allow Alan to say it.))

OOC: I shall be off for now. Feel free to use my character as you wish for now. Sorry I can't add to the RP right now but I'd proably clicheify (hmm, clicheify, that's a wierd word) the story up. That and I must go to bed right now. I apologize for the interruption.

Salana was still reading when Virgil's message came through, then Alan's, with an air of horror. He dropped the book, bursting out of the library doors, across the 2nd sublevel corridor to the the armoury. He quickly put on a thick torso armour vest, liquid kevlar gloves, put on a utility belt, shoving a box of 24 shotgun shells into a pouch, then picked up a SPAS-15 shotgun, and a .44 revolver. All ready to go in less than one minute. He ran down one flight of stairs, as quickly as he could to the medical corridor, to see that Sydney had already got the situation under control. He gave a sigh of relief, though amazed when he saw that the beast was alive.
"You left it alive?" Alan yelped.
((continuing from Sydney))
Sydney glared at them. "'It?'The poor thing. It was scared, don't you understand? It was scared." He then started to drag it back down into the medlab. He was going to need a LOT of carrots...
"You're kidding right? That thing is vicious, it wounded Virgil." Saldana frowned at the stunned rodent.

Sydney glared at the incredulous Colonel. "What if you woke up with s**t growing out of you that had no right to be there? And look at Virgil's wound, Colonel. Surely years of military experience will tell you that is a bullet wound?"
Sydney glared at them. The drums were getting closer, and he was starting to agree with what they said. But there was the matter of the rabbit. He dragged it back into the ruined medlab. He called out to the others:
"That stun should last for at least an hour, maybe more. I tested it on a horse, and it was out for several hours."

Virgil slowly picked himself up out of the closet, wincing a little at the pain of the bullet in his leg. "Lucky I nailed myself in the bad leg, just a matter of yanking out the round since it's so numb." After being sure of his footing he helped up Alan. "I kinda feel sad for it, little Motherf***er ain't too well off I think." Virgil began a slow walk over to the bunny. "We can deduce that whatever did this can travel through blood easily and can affect small mammals but not humans." Walking back over to Syndey slowly he wanted to hug him for saving his life but held his reserve. "Do you have any idea what can cause this?"
