(I'm referring to "The Crucible" which is a play based on the Salem Witch Trials. Long story short, in the play, a bunch of Puritan girls are caught dancing, two of them "fall ill", everyone thinks witches are doing it, and they start hauling off and hanging people. If you confess you are "saved" - a bit of jail, but no hanging. If you deny it, you're a witch and you hang. The motives for accusing witches started to become nastier - greed, jealously, ect. Lots of people die. The whole thing was faked by the dancing bunch.)
