In the UK, a number of people have recently been reported to the police for tweets or social media posts that caused 'hurt feelings', and these people have then been visited by police officers in order to 'have their thinking checked'. Isn't that perilously close to having a 'thought police'? Have you read Orwell's 1984?

What makes you think that I haven’t read it? Why can’t people just avoid tweeting hate speech? Isn’t hate speech a crime depending on its severity in the UK or do you consider that a thought crime as well? Don’t you think that we should be encouraging respect and tolerance towards minority groups?

This 'hate speech' business is right at the heart of it, isn't it? Do you believe that the expression of socially conservative views is now hate speech? Or having the 'wrong' perspective on climate change?

Why would climate change be considered hate speech? Isn’t hate speech, technically, expressions of hatred towards people, especially that which involves people’s sex, gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation?

I agree with virtually all of that! Did you know however that on a climate change demonstration in the UK a few months ago, many of the protesters were holding up placards denouncing 'climate hate speech' (I think they meant that climate change scepticism was hate speech)?

If I said I don’t believe in climate change (though I do!), do you believe I should be visited by police just for expressing that view?

Don’t you believe this would set a bad precedent? Could it be that police could, using that logic, visit people who are atheists?

you wouldn't (yet) get a visit from HM constabulary for that, but if someone reported your comment to the police as offensive, then you could well receive a visit to 'check your thinking'. My understanding of the situation is that it would be recorded as a 'non-crime hate incident' or something of the sort. At least one organization in the Hate Speech industry now classes climate change scepticism as 'hate speech'. This is how crazy the whole business has become.

Who, in this thread, has implied that people should be sent to prison for saying that climate change isn’t real? Seriously, where was that stated?

Wasn’t the main issue about people using hate speech towards individuals who are LGBT+? Why would anyone think that it’s okay to engage in bullying unless they were bullies themselves?

Aren’t laws regarding hate speech important?
