I suppose it's stereotypical, but stereotypes usually are what comes to mind when someone mentions something you aren't too familiar with.

The second thing was a koala.

The fact that large portions if not most if its territory is absolutely, profoundly uninhabitable (as I understand it). I could compare to Canada, but if I understand correctly there are relatively few parts of Canada that somebody hasn't tried to inhabit at one time or another. OTOH the Nullarbor Plain is basically a wasteland where no primitive human could possibly survive (although a modern human could survive there with enough gear). In contrast, Death Valley is probably one of the most desolate parts of the US, but even so people have lived there, I believe. Also, such places represent a relative small fraction of US land area.
