Challenge: Trying to Understand Humor
Page 1 of 1 [ 2 posts ]
In setting-up a work-related questionnaire that required me to attach photos I attached the following:
It made me question, "Why do other people think rubber chickens are so funny? I don't get it."
Granted, most mainstream humor confuses me; I've watched many "funny movies" that I just don't find remotely amusing. But I do wonder why others find certain things funny or comical, and it makes me want to understand just a little bit.
In the case of the rubber chicken, there's a lot of online resources that attempt to explain it. None of them do a great job, but this one is alright: http://answergirlnet.blogspot.com/2007/06/why-are-rubber-chickens-funny.html:
Quote:
Back when people had to clean their own chickens, though, it must have been one of the nastier chores of the day. The idea of carrying a plucked dead chicken around in one's pocket, just in case, would have been both disgusting and funny. Of course you wouldn't take its head off, because how gross would that be? But you'd take the feathers off to save space. The initial view of the dead chicken -- an 18th century version of fast food -- would have been shocking and disgusting, but once you found out it was a fake, you'd laugh.
Now my challenge to you: name something that others find funny/comical/amusing you don't understand AND a short explanation you found from somewhere online that will help you - and us all - begin to understand why others find it funny.

I had no idea people found rubber chickens funny.
Here's something I don't get why people find funny: Men dressing in women's clothes. It wasn't easy finding good comments about it. These two are from Yahoo answers. I think the first one might be a subconscious part of why I'm not amused by it, but tend to feel uncomfortable.

Because when women dress up as men (eg. in suits, men's pants etc) it's usually so they can be taken more seriously.
When men dress up as women, they're demeaning themselves and trying to convey they're meek and feminine, which is why it's funny.
What's funnier is that even women find this funny despite the fact it's basically implying women are inferior or weaker.

because women wear clothing that's similar to male clothing all the time. We don't see it as unusual. In regular life men rarely wear anything like women's clothing. And men are still homophobic, much of the humor men get from seeing other guys in dresses is because they feel uncomfortable with the idea themselves.
