Some people compulsively gamble. Some people smoke crack. Some people shoot heroin. I take pictures of small cute fuzzy things. My latest binge:

This is Simon. Simon is female. Why is a female hamster named Simon? "I reattached a girl's leg once...."

Image

Simon is a 5 month old banded Syrian. When she was about a month old she escaped her cage and got into my roommate's moron fiance's hair dye and ended up hot pink. It was really bright then but it's faded to a dull tint now.

Image

Image

She likes hanging out on my laptop when I want to type something. At least she's too light to push any keys.

Image

This behavior confounds some of our roommates.

Image

When I get the camera out she likes to either move around too much for me to get a shot off, or pose for me:

Image

Here we are the day of the dye incident, after a thorough rinsing off to prevent the eating of debatably nutritious pink hair dye:

Image

She makes effective use of the other residents of the house:

More posing:

I should remember to use "Close-up" mode on the camera next time.

Having pets is better than crack. Or WoW. Or whatever.

Your hamster and your cat are both CUTE!

"Hamster" is derived from the German "hamstern," meaning "to hide."

You mean nutria isn't just the Spanish word for otter?

Adorable? They hiss.

The only hamster I had (named Ham, of course)
was our Guinea Pig's pet (who was named pork).

It became undead, and was a terror to all who
dealt with it.

It's the name of the undercoat of the pictured animal - They use them to make fur coats and such. Forgot their real name.

Yes nutria is Spanish for otter. And nutria were used to make fur coats. But when it comes right down to it. They are very large river rats from South America.

Here's a better (for anyone who hasn't seen one before) photo showing the size of one.

It's really cute.

I used to tame lizards, snakes and squirrels. I kept a snake I found, and I played with the lizards... but my mother insisted that I not touch the squirrels. Probably for the best, all things considered.

A nutria would be very difficult to keep happy in captivity, but I do like to see the otters at the Seattle Aquarium. They're very playful!

Pet wise. People in the complex are allowed to have small animals only.

Here's a list of potentials I like.

1-Pug
2-Rabbit
3-Skunk (descented of course)
4-Chinchilla
5-Sugar Glider
6-Ferret
7-Ball Python
8-Iguana
9-King Snake
10-Frilled dragon/lizard

And I figured that they were called nutria because they
were so tasty.

Better than WoW? Not sure about that one! You could also have a pet in WoW!
