For those of you who have had female puppies. I had a question about spaying. We will be picking up our almost 6 month old West Highland Terrier puppy this weekend. The vet in PA doesn't do spaying before 6 months old. I called up 3 vets here in Northern VA, and all 3 different in their procedures. These vets are all in the same county within 10-15 min from each other.

The vet within walking distance from my house says that the puppy will be kept overnight but no one will monitor her. That makes no sense! She would need to be monitored to make sure she is breathing ok, etc. ! Cost around $400

Another vet closer to where we used to live, also keeps puppies overnight, but there are kennel staff available to monitor the puppies. Cost would be $250.

Another vet however, no puppies are kept overnight. Simply drop them off around 8am, and pick them up later in the afternoon. Cost around $500

To me spaying or neutering seems to be major surgery. So I wonder why 3 different vets, all in the same county have different procedures. It confuses me. I definitely don't want her left alone without any vet there. 24 hour vets I know charge me due to the overnight charge and such.

Sounds like some of the Vets are not very confident of their work!

The anesthesia should wear off after 8-10 hours. The reason to keep them at the vets is 1) it's a controlled enviroment/puppie can't really hurt itself in the cage. 2) it's a calm/quiet environment/puppie won't get all riled up.

I've had many pets spayed/neutered & never had a problem. Having said that, it IS the equivalent of General Anesthesia to a person & there are inherant risks (like, what? 1 in 3,000 or something like that)

The vet I use I know. They NEVER leave an animal until they KNOW the anesthesia is wearing/has worn off.

Good luck to you & the pup!
