What is your first name? Steve

Age: 51

Location: Hong Kong

Current perseverations: Getting my head around finding out I'm AS. (Motorcycles in storage in UK, PC and Music equipment in container on its way from my last post in the Middle East.) I'm going up the wall living in a hotel with my family at the moment with no self space. New home by the end of the month, with a room to myself for my stuff. No Motorcycle yet though.

When did you discover AS? About 4 weeks ago.

Do you have other psych diagnoses? No

Do you have a degree? BSc Mechanical Engineering, MSc Systems Engineering

Kids? 2 Girls (1 NT & 1 AS)

Favorite music, other than NIN Lots of music. I like making rock and roll ather than listening to others.

Job? Senior Manager

Relationship with significant other, past or present? Married 24 years (Wife suspected I'm AS for some time and has had enough of me. Still hanging in there though.)

Plans for the future? In a new country. Let's see what happens.

Anything else you feel is pertinent:
I have always considdered myself a little different to most people, but it was a surprise to me last month when I realised that I was AS. My wife had suspected for years but I was reluctant to admit I had a syndrome. I have not had a formal diagnosis but I fit the model and pass all of the online tests. It's a shame there isn't an award or a prize.

It is also a surprise to find out how miserable I have made my wife over the years. I still don't really understand what it is that she is so upset about. I just know that her life is a misery, it's my fault and she can't explain why. Previously, I would have argued my point and tried to apply logic and reason to the issue. Now that I know I'm AS, there is an explanation and it really is my fault, whatever it is. I don't know what to do about it yet though. :(

If I reason back in my typically AS way, it makes things worse. Any advice on how to deal with my emotional blind spots to avoid conflict is gratefully recieved.

I'm finding this website to be good though. I've been browsing about for a while and I do have lots in common with others that post. Perhaps I'm not that different after all. :)

One thing you might try is admitting to your wife that you really don't understand what's going on, tell her that you aren't intentionally trying to be difficult, and ask her to help you to understand. OR, if there are people who know you well and how you interact with your wife, and you trust their judgment, ask them how you can improve your interactions. Many times people respond positively when we ask for help - and then we work hard to improve.

Best of luck Steve.
