@Will - Theanine. It is a miracle, but as far as I know you can't get anything in the EU? (Not sure).

If you don't mind risking a benzo-like addiction, Phenibut, but again, I doubt available in EU. I feel so sorry for you EU folks, but here in the USA they will get around to outlawing supps soon enough. There is just too much money to be made by for-profit doctors and big pharma to let us stay free.

When the USA goes full police-state on my ass, it is not going to be pretty........

I've had that problem my whole life. I've also had a sort of psychotic disorder. However I was diagnosed and started on Abilify. Let me say, Abilify was a miracle drug for me. Its non-addicting. It curbed my psychotic tendencies and it rid me of my anxiety issues. This is not a promotion for abilify.

Is Seroxat or Zoloft or Prozac or whatever appropriate for occasional use in these kind of situations? I also don't want to accidentally become addicted to them.

Treatment for effectively social anxiety would be cognitive behavioural therapy and there are some books, websites or even see a therapist. This is drug free!
I'm on Zoloft for depression and actually feeling better socially. Anti-depressants are used in anxiety. You are on it constantly for at least several months.
I've tried several anti-depressants and had limited success, it's a case of trying it and seeing if it works and only staying on it if the side effects are OK.I think these things can be addictive, but you come off and on them slowly under medical supervision and I've had no problems aside from some side effects like feeling sick for a few weeks.

I would strongly be against any drug that wasn't through a doctor. I do find a little alcohol helps.
Some people like things like Bach's rescue remedies, but I'm not entirely convinced and they might just have a placebo effect. I don't think over the counter remedies are generally that effective. My friends swears by 5HT to help her sleep though.

Valerian root's an herb that is a mild sedative (but much stronger than chamomile). I take it from time to time in pill or tea form. It's sold in the US as a sleeping herb. I take about half a sleeping dose. Long term use of it is probably not good for the liver--like many things--but it gets me through tough situations now and then.
