Do they cut your foodstamps when you're approved for SSI?

i'm a young man with autism and bipolar and diabetes. i live in florida and i recently got approved for SSI a couple months ago. I have also been getting foodstamps for about a year since i was sent to live down here.

im just wondering, will they cut my foodstamps now that im on SSI? and if so, by how much?

does anyone else have experience with this?

I don't believe they would cut off your food stamps (SNAP).

Your income on SSI is very low----so I would believe that you would be eligible for at least some food stamps.

how much though? im getting roughly 700$ in ssi. and i was getting 192$ in foodstamps. im just hoping they wont cut it too much

I don't believe you would get much lower than $192 in food stamps if you get $700 from SSI.

I believe, if you're on SSI, that you are assigned a social worker.

I doubt that you will get much less than $192 if you live alone. If you live with your parents, you might get less.

Florida had a big cut in food stamps a few years ago and people on SSI were really shafted.

Most individuals living on the main SSI allotment which is about $750/month (just went up a bit), no longer qualify for food stamps, or if they do, it is just a pittance, say $12 bucks a month. Each year that SSI gets a raise, your food stamp benefit is lowered by the same amount. Nasty catch-22. Many people rely on food pantries to get through the month. You might want to start looking for some in your area.

You will probably continue to get the same amount of food stamps until you get your annual review. Typically that is when they cut it. If you are a woman with a child under five, you can apply for WIC which has additional food benefits

My girlfriend is on SSI & SNAP & like kraftie said, blazingstar knows what she's talking about. I will add thou that food-stamps are also based on your expenses for housing & utilities.

well you were right. i just got a letter saying that they're cutting my foodstamps down to 15$ a month. im not upset about it though because i can afford to buy even more food now that ive been approved for SSI so it's cool.

Jesus, that's awful. I'm glad you are not upset, but having disabled people live on so little is ridiculous in one of the richest countries in the world.

I have a pending SSDI application, and I would be pissed if my food stamps benefit were decreased so much after I'm awarded so little money.

Paying for food with cash instead of food stamps would be a nice change, however—it's idiotic that people cannot purchase hot ready-made food with food stamps, especially given that homeless people get a hot meal so rarely.

If you receive a lower SSI benefit because you are living with relatives or roommates, you might be eligible for a larger amount of food stamps. In general the SSI program was intended to cover your food and some of your housing expenditures. However, they assume you either would own your own home already and then would only have to pay utilities, taxes, and insurance on the house. Otherwise it is assumed you would live in subsidized housing of some type, because SSI was not ever intended for being adequate to pay rent on an apartment or a mortgage on a house. In a more just world, perhaps SSI would pay a bit reasonable amount out and there would be less of a need for the subsidized housing, and food stamps wouldn't be necessary. Some states do pay extra out to you if you get federal SSI, like California adds on about 200 dollars more, though you don't get food stamps there. Alaska pays out an extra 400 dollars or so, plus there is a modest basic income type dividend, so you do get more there. Though, most stuff costs a little extra even in Anchorage or Fairbanks so it ends up being a little less money in the end. The weather probably is a big reason why few people will move to Alaska despite the extra help there.

You won't get any more food-stamps after next month unless the government shutdown ends. The food stamps for next month may go out this month like the 20th depending on what state your in. Then they'll be out of funding until the government reopens.
