Get a passport, they last longer (10 years) and they are a valid ID everywhere.

That said..
I agree with the post that encourage you to get a license. There is a good chance there be situations where you will need to drive.

Can you be more specific? I can't figure out from the webpage of links what there a person might be afraid of in relations to getting a driver's liscense.
