Music and Aspies?

Music (be it Scarlatti, Oscar Peterson, Schubert, The Smiths) can take me into another world.
I don't see it in colours (what a gift !) but I definitely see it as something physical, whether vibrations, or what I call the "glassy sculpting of the air" yes I know I am a bit strange like that !
Sitting in a catherdral for a carol service at Christmas listening to Taverner's "The Lamb" I tried to put it into words:
Anyone know what I am talking about ?

A ball of utter joy and light
Condensing wonders of the mind

Decelerating time and turning
Floating in a secret sphere

Music is weird to me, I think, what inspires people to sing and create sounds out of machines or beat on drums? but I like all kinds.

Oh MY god Music really effects me emotionally!

alot of music is so beautiful it reduces me to floods of tears! i can get really excited and hyper with other types of music too. often if i hear somthing i really love my hair on my body will stand on end! i seem to ellicit far greater emotional response than most people.

say for example i have to wait in a hotel for a while, if thyre playing moving classical music it will eventaully just wear me down til im so emotional i wont know what to do with it all! except shed a tear or two!

I do see patterns and visuals with certain music styles, especially with percussion or electronic music.

Music is one of the few things that really inspire feelings in me. Would go mad without it.

the other night there was a tap dripping in the bathroom, and i could hear it from my bed.
the rhythm of the drops inspired me to think musically and i made up a song that was perfectly punctuated by the sound of the drops.
eventually i was very absorbed in this song, but i realized that i must go to sleep and i got up and turned the tap off tightly.

always i make songs up in my head. even if i am listening to a ring tone when i am calling someone on the phone, i start to imagine a song built around it, and when the person answers, i am sometimes annoyed that they aborted the tone i was listening to.

i know i must play other peoples music in order to learn, so i play both other peoples and my music in my head (and on the synth)

Music is ONE of my obsessions ..... too tired to say much more about it t the moment but I will come back to this thread soon.

Yes, I'm surprised and bewildered (and secretly very disappointed) when people aren't particularly interested or don't have some passion about it. It doesn't matter if its a style or genre that doesn't appeal to me, as long as there is some reason why people care about it - but obviously I'm happier when there are shared "likes"

It's a shorthand, a conduit and a way of translating my emotions....sometimes I have to work backwards from what I'm listening to to work out how I feel....and some songs (In particular Do you realise by Flaming Lips, Johnny Cash's version of Hurt) that are almost unbearable for me because they affect me so much.

That's almost an "in-joke" I guess...

Music is my life blood. I cannot live without it, and it has been that way since I was a very young child. I have come to see it, in a sense, as an outlet for emotion I simply cannot express. Music expresses it for me so well, and it has long been my way of introducing myself to those becoming closer to me. I also get very intense memories when songs play, and like, see things...not colours, just imagery, and imagery from memories. It sort of brings out in me all the emotions I dont feel the rest of the time.

I love music. Unpatterned sound, especially loud ones, disturb me, but music creates patterns out of noise. In fact, one way I cope with, say, a jackhammer I have to walk by, is by wrapping a song around it, which fits the rhythm.

I have a song in the back of my head almost all the time. Matching external sound to my internal soundtrack is always very soothing. I love my iPod.

I definitely respond to music on an emotional level. I can even change my mood by starting with a song that matches my current bad mood, and gradually moving through several songs that are more and more upbeat.

i rarely name my songs. it was not really a song, but a series in mental rhythms that got progressively more complicated. it is like once you establish a new pattern, then you can tjhink it with no conscious effort to remember it, and so you can think of new patterns to overlay on the mental rhythm structure being built.

another thing i like to do is to imagine complex multi bar rhythms that do not rhythmically intersect with the drop except on eg. every 7th drop.
i did not think of any melody when listening to the tap. just tribal kinds of rhythms.

as for naming songs i compose, i usually call them yymmdd(x), so the last one i made up was called "090519(3)" (the "3" is to denote it is the third version of the song for that day).
i do this because they sort alphabetically and date wise concurrently. also because i remember my songs more by the date i wrote them than any name i could give to them.

i do not write lyrics so i do not really have any theme that can be described by naming the song.

hehe i wish, no that was the work of one andreas vollenweider from switzerland. its not really typical of what i like but i remembered it as a child.

i enjoyed how you described how you created thes 'songs' in your mind.

For myself, when I was young, I liked baroque music because it stimulated everything but my emotions! Now I gravitate to old music of the 20's and 30's, from all around the world because of it's close, profound human appeal

I agree with so many people that I won't attempt to quote them all.

I feel like I'm taken to another world while listening to music, singing, or playing the piano.

It is VERY emotional. Music was one of the solaces I had growing up. One of the few peaceful areas of my life! It's still a main "soother." I also don't relate well to those for whom music is not important. Both sides of my family were musical.

Also, with certain songs I completely lose myself. Time, space, the world no longer exists. Sometimes it feels as if my soul is melding with the sound and I'm not physically present anymore.

I get emotions from music that I can't experience any other way. I seem to dig weird sounds and textures more than plain melody though. I generally like anything that creates a tense moody atmosphere or just sounds haunting/pretty to me.
