No i dont need to retest. Here in germany we have a thing called "MPU" (translates to medicinic & psychological examination) wich you have to attend to if you either driven under the influence of a high dose of alcohol, illegal drugs or if the vehicle department of your city is questioning your ability to handle a vehicle safely just because they think so. Its kinda arbitrarily because a single person has to decide that. The thing is, this MPU thing is really expensive and about 50% of normal people fail them if they dont take specific training for it before attending. Wich is again expensive. And i am not normal. You need to give the psychologist a good impression of yourself, and im not quite good at giving a good impression ;) Anyway, living of welfare now i cannot afford to do the MPU, and if things go on like they do now that wont change anytime soon...

Peace

Considering that the Autobahn is a fast road, German Driver Education is quite thorough, difficult and expensive, from what I've read.

Me, forget it ever driving in Germany. I'm a nervous wreck driving I-83 to Bawlmer or US 30 to Filthydelphia or Picksburgh.

I5 corridor between Olympia and Seattle has become downright hairy as well. 8O

Meistersinger is right. Getting a drivers license costs around ~1200 Euros here. Expensive, but i think its worth it though. Despite having the (for 50% of it) limitless autobahn we also have a very low statistic of fatal driving accidents. The drivers education is very in depth. People just better know how to drive if you let them go 250 kmh plus if they feel like it. The fastest i have been going while still in drivers education was 180 Kmh (112 mph)

Its quite fun to push the pedal to the floor and go full speed if the autobahn is empty but yes, forget to drive on it if your a nervous driver. Rule #1 on the autobahn: There is always someone faster than you. If you go 230 kmh (VMax of my car) on the left lane, just expect a BMW to come up from behind and flash you. But you can stick to the right lane and keep behind the trucks @ 80 Kmh (50 mph). I have my days when im not up to the stress then i just cruise there. Right lane is pretty relaxed...

^^^^ must be nice to have all that glass-smooth racecar pavement to enjoy over there in Mercedes-land, the roads in 99.99% of amuuurica range from mediocre to medieval. so in light of our generally crappy roads [worsening unfilled suspension-killing potholes, frost heaves, entire chunks of missing pavement, ripples et al] our ridiculously low speed limits may be partially justified.

glass smooth racecar pavement? :D :D :D :D

We have areas where the autobahn is unlimited, but you better keep it to 100 Kmh if you dont want to see your spring/shock combo flying through the hood, metaphoricly speaking. It depends on how wealthy the "bundesland" (kinda simliar to the states in the US) is your driving in. The farther you go east, the crappier the roads. And the downside of the better maintance of the autobahn is - raodwork sites everywhere. Rule of thumb - There is at least 1 for every 100 kilometers you have to drive. On the normal roads the pavement often is just as defective as you describe it...

also I suspect german cars are engineered to better handle poor pavement than typical American models which rattle themselves to death in less than 100,000 miles.

Yes, thats probably true. While i love the sound of a classic US V8, they are just not "made in germany"^^

all the german cars I've heard [aside from Porsches] sound like sewing machines to me, very refined and smooth. not the typical amuurican v8 burble.

now now, don't exactly have my car yet, so i'm still at the mercy of my parents keys....

was planning to go to goleta tomorrow to get a few disks resurfaced. i can drive there, still, going there on the bus takes out a good chunk of the day, and i actually like that.

No, no trouble driving if I know where I am going. I can get very stressed if I don't have clear directions though. I have to screen shot the GPS directions and study them before I leave as I find taking the verbal instructions from the GPS hard to follow as I'm not good at judging distance (e.g. I miss a lot of turn offs). If my child is in the car screaming etc this can limit my concentration so I have to stop, appease him, then get going again. I live in a country area with no public transport so I have no choice but to drive. Public transport scares me, and cities! I don't drive in cities.

I panic too and it causes meltdowns for me. I also seem to have no sense of direction at all. My boyfriend was our family's driver... He just got a DUI and his license will be suspended for 2 years.. I need to drive instead. I don't know how to cope with this...
