I love driving itself, I have several performance cars and go out in the hills and drive on the windy roads.
However I hate traffic, and I have so much anxiety even on the trip to work every day. Am I in the correct lane, am I holding people up, have I left enough room etc.

I can't drive to new places anymore- the times I've forced myself, I've had to write down turn by turn instructions on a piece of paper. I don't trust GPS systems - I use them as a guide. I rely heavily on my partner to drive me places, which does cause some problems, as he doesn't always want to go do the same thing

I also get very angry at people who break the rules - drive too fast, cut people off, swerve over 2 lanes to take an exit at the last minute, people who accelerate to slowly etc.

I'm a terrible driver, when I have to drive in the city sometimes I freeze up when I don't know what to do and I can't think

No, I used to when I first started though.
I think anxiety is really crippling when it comes to things...
I still get huge anxiety when doing new things, I have to take a benzo...
I find driving empowering, it's one of my few freedoms, even though, I am an adult..
Driving on the freeway is actually the best part.....

I'm the opposite. I've never had an accident, but when someone is in the rig chatting in my ear or trying to backseat drive I start doing stupid s**t.

Oh, and the worst thing ever is taking a wrong turn. That will upset me for a long time, especially if it takes a while to correct.

I've worked in trucking administration most of my life. At one point I thought my career had stalled and I should attempt to become a truck driver. Passing the goverment test driving a tractor trailer was difficult, but I did get a professional driving license.

I didn't think the idea though enough. I never thought of all the 'difficult' people I would have to deal with. People who work lousy jobs in warehouses and so forth that would take it out on me. I never considered the work involved in loading, servicing, and maintaining the truck, or the danger. I had several 'trial' jobs at being a truck driver and I failed at all of them.

At my last experience, I was driving a dump-truck loaded with gravel out of a gravel pit, with sheer slopes on either side of the narrow gravel road, suddenly the truck stalled half way up the hill and started to roll backwards. I put on the emergency brake which stopped the truck on a dime. But then I'm sitting there, half way up a hill, 50,000 lbs of gravel in the back and steep cliffs on either side, and stuck, dead if I even jump out. I was able to restart the truck, but you can't get it going with such a heavy load at a 45 degree angle, so I let it roll back down the hill and then started back up it again. Scariest moment of my entire life, that was the first and last day on that job.

I've since had two jobs as truck dispatchers, read 'office supervisor', which I wouldn't have had without the training; but I don't want to drive a truck again.

I love to drive if I'm in the "right" frame of mind. On the other hand, Police cars freak me out and I get a very short temper when people do stupid things/cause hazards i.e. joining the M25 whilst driving in front of me at 45mph, coming off a roundabout without indicating, sudden braking for no reason, are some examples.
I don't like having passengers, it makes me nervous and detracts from the experience of "being free".

Just wondering if anyone here has trouble driving a car. Whenever I drive a car I get HUGE anxiety and totally panic. Freeways are the worst. The only places I really feel comfortable driving are areas I know REALLY well like the town where I grew up. I currently live in a place where i don't need a car (I take the subway) but I may soon need to move to a place that will require a car...(possibly moving to the suburbs to buy a house, got kids now.) Does anyone else here have experience like this?

I used to be much better about driving, but am finding it difficult to concentrate now. I am more comfortable when there is someone else in the car helping keep a watch out for surprises/obstacles. I am also better with my service dog along as she notices when I am starting to zone out and will alert me. My neurologist has recommended that I don't drive anymore, so I have recently signed up for a handicapped (discounted) transit pass.

I have noticed my husband having anxiety while driving for years. Now I understand that it is because of information overload. He cannot multitask.
I drive as often as I can now and he has no problem. I feel safe and we arrive less stressed.
I regret all those years I could have helped and the times when he drove by himself for work. He always said his time driving on I-10 was the most dangerous part of his job. Now I believe him. :(

I hate driving. I am not a natural driver because I have very poor spatial awareness. This makes me very anxious because I feel that an accident is bound to happen sooner or later and if it does it will be my fault!

I have very much a love and hate relationship with driving. I love cars, and I love "spirited" driving on backroads or empty highways away from other traffic and people. For me to be able to have fun driving, I need to be alone. I've spent a lot of time at like 11-3AM just driving around random backroads and side streets listening to music, occasionally going a bit fast and testing myself in corners, etc. I also own 2 1984 Toyota Supras which I've used as a daily driver (now they're both broken) I love driving for fun, maybe my dream would be something fast, good handling, with an unlimited free gas tank, then I could drive around for leisure all day and everything would be right in the world. I'd like to get into racing, autocross and road course, too, and I love Japanese racing animes and movies, and very much like older import cars.

That said, besides that, I suck at driving. I 80-90% of the time get lost like crazy going to any new place without a GPS, and even with a GPS, I'll occasionally miss turns and waste time regardless. Also, getting to unfamiliar places on a timeframe while driving is quite stressful as I get lost. One bad job I had was a delivery guy in Hartford, I didn't know anything about Hartford and found out I was a naturally bad navigator, and even flunked a delivery with a GPS, as I thought it was in East Hartford, instead of like 1/2 mile down the street.

I get overwhelmed by passengers. I can maybe handle one close friend with me in the car at a time, but when it's more than that, I get overwhelmed by everyone talking, criticizing my driving (which I'm sensitive about I guess, failing my delivery job and getting into one wreck already in only 2 years of driving.) I gotta deal with it anyway, I've even got into some of my worst meltdowns while driving and doing car repairs, too, however, as my father and mother got a divorce, I have to take over the roles of repairing all the cars (as I'm "so smart") and doing all the menial driving my mother can't do.

I can't multitask very well while driving either, I can barely change songs on an mp3 player, and if I answer the phone I can only talk for like 30 seconds (I know technically you're not supposed to do either, but unfortunately real life doesn't warrant...whatever...) I got friends meanwhile that feel comfortable playing PSP while driving, driving with their knees, falling asleep at red lights, etc, and somehow they're never wrecked, it pisses me off.

So yeah, it's tough when you love cars, love driving for pleasure but can't handle your daily commuting and work driving very well, it confuses people.

Or maybe I'm a 20 year old James May. Who knows.

I am exactly the same! Narrow streets and busy traffic make me especially nervous. I am sure I will end up scratching a car parked on the side of a narrow road due to my poor spatial awareness.

Learning to drive was a real challenge. The theory test was very easy, while the practical... that is where the problems started. Not to mention the driving instructors. It took me six different instructors and three practical tests to get my license. In all, I felt getting a driving license was a big achievement, as many people said I could not do it.

This is what I do for a living. I test drive prototype cars around LA. But I'm on the night shift, so the traffic is nearly non-existent for me, and I get to spend almost half of the night on Mulholland and the canyon roads surrounding it. Driving fast is one of my passions but, ironically, it is my lack of tickets or accidents that helped get me this job.

And before this job, I spent many years delivering pizzas.

I loved night driving in San Bernardino when I was going to UC Riverside.

I'm gonna keep my mouth shut (or rather, my fingers still), but you just came this close to starting me going on a six hour monlogue about one of my obsessions.

oh god no I have like 0 trouble driving. Now, I dun wanna sound like I'm bragging here, but I have a hyper-alert state of mind that helps me pick out things that could potentially be a problem, without throwing me into a panic. Like that time it snowed and I was coming towards a curve in the road, and a big truck was coming the other way around the curve, and I was POSITIVE he was going to slide, so I stayed back ahead of where I figured he'd slide into, gave myself plenty of room, and I was right! And didn't get slid into. :D

Not at all. I prefer the highway because there is usually less traffic. Although I can't stand traffic congestion that gets me stressed!

I never had to drive much until a few months ago. I drive OK but try to avoid major highways unless it's absolutely necessary.
