For anyone who prefers to not call AS a disability, fine - do what you want, but this DISABILITY has F***ED my life up for 48 years so don't bother telling me otherwise. OK? Thank You!

Indeed it is. Anything that makes it difficult to keep a job is a severe disability, and the older you get, the scarier that becomes.

I went to a local Non-Profit counseling center, initially to be treated for depression, and since AS had been pointed out previously as a strong possibility, I specifically mentioned it to the therapist, who after seeing me for awhile, concurred, and sent me to a psychiatrist for official DX. Certainly there are organizations like this in your region, and if you're unemployed, chances are it may cost little to nothing.

Yup. Still waiting to find out. Have no clue. I was let go from work and am finding it diffficult to find employment. Failing all job interviews. Sometimes the interviewer is just staring at me as if to say, "I can't believe that I'm spending time with this person!"

Oddly, I am an attorney and did well academically in law school. I can research any topic and have been told that I'm an excellent writer. However, when I'm in a social situation I give the impression that I am ret*d. In a job interview, I stutter or babble endlessly.

When I get home, I try to analyze what went wrong. However, at the time of the conversation or interview, I'm totally clueless. I cannot read the other person and cannot figure out what the social dynamics are in a group. I've always felt different - ever since I was a small child watching the other children play but not knowing how to "join the group" - something that most children do instictively.

Asperbergers (however you spell it) sounds like me. I would like to be diagnosed. If I am negative for Asperbergers (correct my spelling if it makes you feel superior), then at least I'll know that I'm just a jerk. If it's positive, then finally I'll know what steps can be taken to correct my deficiencies, or if that's not possible, learn to accept them.

I was Dx'd by an older Dr/Psychologist. He doesn't like "newfangled" terms and said I was "socially ret*d". I work in Information Technology. I get accommodated by being assigned a "minder" if I need to present something in a meeting. Maybe you can try consulting. It is worth a try to seek assignments that limit human contact. Play up your strong points such as not turning loose of a task until complete, perhaps your knowledge of legal procedure, etc. Try to point out an unusual talent you can bring to the table.

I had a talk with my manager about this. She knows my technical skills are solid and points out that I'm a valuable member of the team. People kind of patronize me, but it's a workable situation.

Is there a way to teach adults social skills when they are not, on their own, able to pick up on any social cues?

Any suggestions would be welcome. I have never been a happy person on this planet. Thanks.

yes, from my own experience- the former year I have started to study at a university in another state (although slovakian and Czech language is related and nearly compatible) so I had to pratically "learn" some social customs or the technik of how are the young people there communicating, which tune they use in wich questions and how do they call themselves, because it kind of differs from my initial surrounding I have lived in before. Well the trick is you just need to notice a lot of things in their social contact, I personally was the first half year just standing aways and memorising from the others the system of communication, for example you listen to how they answer some typical questions which are they asked and you can use it in the same form later.. I think that the subconscious imitation of them suits the most to this. I hope I was understandable and at least a bit pragmatic with this :D
