Short-haired lesbians
Well my gf and i both have long hair.
There are the occasional short haired lesbians.
Also short haired Straight woman.
There are so many labels we could throw around also but we just wont get into that lol. I believe its a style. No so much a trademark of lesbians. Kinda like saying all lesbians wear hiking boots and flannels.
Maybe this is more like your looking for them so there seems to be more than usual. when in reality your seeking them out.

I look at several different factors.
Long Haired Men:
Androgynous appearance is more and more the social norm hence the term "metrosexual" especially in younger generations. The current standards are much much more open than in previous generations. I am 43 F and usually mistrust long haired men as they tend to not have jobs or be very stable. This is my perception due to age and being raised in a radical right wing household during the 60's & 70's.
Short Haired Lesbians:
We have a one of the largest Gay and Lesbian poulations in the US (or so the polls state) where I live. The more "butch" types here I have known seem favor mullets which I hate on both men and women but it is a personal choice.
"Older" short haired women:
As I stated I am 43 and have shoulder length hair. I want to get it cut short because my hair is drier (more split ends) nand it frankly as stated much easier to deal with, but I do not want to get mistaken for a lesbian any more than I already am. I have a deep voice, I do not wear makeup as I cannot stand to, and wear typical aspie sensory wear, tshirts, jeans and my favorite, hoodie zip up jackets preferrably in black. I really don't care what people think I am but I get hit on a lot by lesbians due to my dress and unfeminine mannerisms I have never possesed. I have never ever been comfortable being hit on by anyone male or female and I don't really understand it. Thus a very uncomfortable situation I would rather avoid altogether.

The problem with that stereotype, is that innocent people get harassed or discriminated against. i have a friend, who has an auto-immune disease which caused all her hair to fall out. It grows in unevenly, so she has to wear either a wig, or a hat whenever she goes out in public. When we are hanging out, we get a strong vibe from people who seem to assume we are a "couple" just because she has very short hair showing around the edges of her hat, and I like to wear riding boots. It's so stupid. We've also had people treat us rudely when we go into a restaurant or doctor's office. And we are both straight.

Bingo and but I think there's a lot more to it than that.
It's not easy for most of us to have to shave our legs, wear makeup, fix our hairs, or look pleasing to the aesthetic value of what's suppose to be femenine.
Anyway, my hair's grown out and I'm not a lesbian but I happen to like short hair and always wanted mine in a bob-like style.
I don't think all lesbians cut their hair and I don't think heterosexual love to grow their hair. It's the millineum folks, men and women can do whatever they want to their hair. I really haven't based my idea of getting it cut because I don't want to attract a guy. In fact, I'm surprised with all the cute hair cuts, guys don't like them.
Hell I knew a girl who looked further from the stereotype of a lesbian. I was surprised after knowing her for almost a year until she told me.
Also I have very thick hair and it is not easy to maintain especially when fixing it up.

Also keep in mind that many men primp and 'shave' as much as most women so perhaps 'grooming' for presentation is not necessarily a gender specific thing but just a 'mating attraction' thing even if you'tre trying to attract same sex partners. Who knows why we do what we do when it comes to hunting down partners.
