I can really idnetify with the last part of your post.

"I'm just glad to be here. I've been very isolated for a few
years now, hard to have friends in the 'real' world and WP helps
me know I'm not alone & gives me some hope."

I feel the same way...

What is your first name?: < *clue in the avatar*

Age: 39

Location: England

When did you discover AS?: when I was about 20 I used the university library to research my idiosyncrasies. The described symptoms of AS fitted me like a glove. It was a bit of a hallelujah moment.

Do you have other psych diagnoses?: No, not really - I was diagnosed with depression once, but I was probably only depressed because I thought I was weird or mad or something.

Do you have a degree?: Yes

Kids?: 2 - but that's all I can cope with

Favorite music: I'll listen to lots of different types of music. Favourite eras though are the 60's & 80's and bits of the 70's. I've even been known to stick a classical track on every now and then :D

Job?: Technical manager in a university

Relationship with significant other, past or present?: Married 11 years

Plans for the future?: Hmm, nothing really! My only goals in life were to get married, have a family, and be comfortably off. I eventually hit all those, so I currently don't really have any ambitions.

Hey Merle, when you get just a few more posts, you get your own unique title! I think 'Miss McBoing-Boing' is perfect!

I finally read this thread. It's nice to finally fit in somewhere and not feel like such a freak. :)

What is your first name? Wendy. Duh.

Age: 30

Location: Indiana, but I hate it here. Want to move back to PA, or pretty much anywhere but the midwest.

Current perseverations: organics, bikes, pottery (making it myself)

When did you discover AS? last year, researching what was "wrong" with my ds. I already knew whatever it was, I had as well b/c he's exactly like me, only I was obsessed with animals at his age and all he thinks about is video games.

Do you have other psych diagnoses? no

Do you have a degree? B.S. chemistry

Kids? 3 boys, aged 7, 3, and 1.

Favorite music, other than NIN Laughing. I like NIN, U2, classic rock, enya, lots of stuff.

Job? professional kid wrangler

Relationship with significant other, past or present? married to my husband, who claims to be NT, but if he is, he's pretty close to this side of the spectrum.

Plans for the future? other than not killing my children? I plan on going back to school when the youngest starts preschool. I can't decide what to go for, though. I keep going back and forth between pharmacy and nursing, but then I wonder if something completely unrelated would be better for me.

Hey Wendy, email me if you have any questions about nursing. It's a tough profession for an aspie, in my experience.

Ha! Mine too! (Bouncing keeps me alert and helps me fidget. I find it more comfortable than a chair as well.) I swear Merle, you are right - we are soul mates! (Which makes me very happy - you are a wonderful person).

I meant to apologize earlier for giving you this new moniker. You've had enough people in your life pinning names on you and here I go doing the same. Please forgive me Merle, if I have caused you any offense because of this. All my parents' friends good-naturedly called me Gerald McBoing-Boing when I was an older kid (finally able to talk and hear), and it looks like you see that I meant it that way as well, and I do hope so, as I would never hurt you intentionally. I thinks you are a big sweety!! ! :)

With love and respect for you my friend,
Chuck

(Congrats on the upcoming 1000th post! Reflecting their author, what interesting and lovely posts they've been! Here's to thousands more!)

I rock all the time, but a big ball to bounce on sounds heavenly. I wonder what dh would make of that???

I found out the hard way that rolpoly people shouldn't sit on rolypoly rubber balls. It is a little hard on the ego!

There are other really good points to using the "ball" as a chair, not just as a stress reliever. When they first came out The Wife was going to a chiorpracter for a shoulder problem, he was trying to get the thing patented or some such thing. Me I like my chair, went through a bunch looking for the right one. The "ball" is a good thing, well in theroy for some, right Blessed?

Yeah!! It is good for a laugh for my kids!! And I suppose if I used the rolypoly ball enough it would reduce my rolypoly bottom, thus reducing my rolypoly-butt induced stress!!

What is your first name? Chris

Age: 39

Location: PA,USA

Current perseverations: plywood;antenna farms;the musics of Pamelia Kurstin and the Moors;cherry fruit leather;agate guitar picks and EBow;vistas(distant views);skyscraperpageDOTcom forums;ancho chiles;geodes;ruins;musical simultaneity;insect watching/listening;General Semantics;WP and ASD sites;armchair wanderlust

When did you discover AS?

twenty years ago,a roommate who worked with autistic adults recognized ASD qualities in me(which meant little to me at the time)

a few years ago, after ruling out other clinical possibilities,my then-therapist correlated some of my life-long "difficulties" with what little she knew of AS(which meant little to me at the time;the strict DSM criteria did not jibe)

beginning about two years ago, exploring the complexities of ASD online and, much to my surprise,it started to "click"

I am still uncertain where(or if)I actually fit on the spectrum, but much of what I have learned about ASD has resonated with me and helped explain my self to myself.

Do you have other psych diagnoses? no official diagnoses, but a few instances of recognized and treated low-grade anxiety and depression

Do you have a degree? no

Kids? no human children, three adored cats

Favorite music, other than NIN I'm very particular about what I listen to,but I don't favor any one particular "genre".(NIN trivia:when I was in high school,TReznor was in a band with my guitar teacher)

Job? currently "between jobs",living on savings and odd/temp jobs until I find another full-time position that I can(hopefully)stomach.I've held a variety of jobs thus far, mostly with competence, though no career aspirations as of yet(to the dismay of family).

Relationship with significant other, past or present? married ten years, together fifteen years, known each other twenty-three years(my god,how did that happen?we both seem like teenagers....)

Plans for the future? perhaps lofty plans:healthy "re-programming",better accept who I am in relation to the world-at-large,and hopefully thrive(or at least survive)from a perspective that makes sense to me.I expect to do creative work throughout my life.I'd love to find an occupation I actually liked.

Anything else you feel is pertinent: I really appreciate and respect the courage and honesty of everyone here who has been forthcoming with their particular challenges and strengths. No one clinical source could possibly be so illuminating. Also, based on your posts, there are many talented writers and thinkers here.

What is an antenna farm(and have them been greatly harmed, economically speaking, with the advances in cable and satilite TV?)

yes, they're not as visible as they were in the "golden days" of broadcasting, though it's interesting to see how "farms" of satellite dishes have taken root(and so weirdly disguised as faux trees and such). There's no escaping the infrastructure, but for most people it becomes "invisible".It feels like an alien arrangement,to find a huge buzzing mass of technological structure set amidst the remaining natural fringes of civilization. That is,hike into the "wilderness" and you just may stumble upon an enormous satellite dish or radio tower. For whatever reasons,I find that juxtaposition interesting(if not entirely likeable).
