I generally have a five-point checklist before I lend money to people:
1. Can I afford to lend the money to other people? (If I am in debt, I usually wont help others)
2. Who am I lending it to? Can I trust them. (A close family member would be different than a fair weather friend)
3. What will they be spending the money on? (Is it going to be spent on booze or gambling?)
4. Is there some mechanism in place so I can ensure my money is returned? (Collateral or ink and paper. So they can't just run off)
5. Do they have a reasonable plan to get out of debt. (They need to make a commitment to cut expenditures until their debt is paid.)

What are your thoughts on lending money to other people?

People generally won't pay you back unless they're a close family member or your best friend.

I tend to believe this, too, which is why I lend very rarely. of course I have a 'justifiable' excuse now. I'm poor and broke most of the time. I have 20 bucks or less to last me until like the 6th or 8th of next month.

I never lend money. I just don't think it's a good idea because it changes the relationship forever. If someone I truly care about needs money, and I have it to give I will give them what they need.

He's on the hundred dollar bill though. lol

if i want to see the money again i don't lend it. five bucks to a mate, no problems because i don't care if he pays me back. sometimes they do pay you back and its a bonus. lending money to people who can't pay their bills? that's what bankruptcy is for, and financial counseling services which i would tell them to do. and then the person on the phone can tell them to stop being a twat and to live within their means. that way they don't hate ME for telling the truth.

I would just give them money to help and not expect to be paid back. That is if I could afford to.

I've did that before with two different people I met on PSN. I gave one $50 and the other $20. They're still on my friend list too.

I don't do well with this line of thinking. I think it is my money, so if I lend it to you, you should give it back. I lent 50 dollars to this woman in august or september of last year. she comes up with excuse after excuse as to why she doesn't have it for me to get back. I could really use that damn 50, too.
