I'm new on this so I haven't got a clue what I'm doing. I've worked for 13yrs and now my kids are in university (which is great for them). I am now burn- out, however. The insurance company is giving me the run around. I don't have the energy for this. I have now retained a lawyer on contingency. I'm sure they will win....but I stand lose everything I have worked so hard for for so long, no matter what... Which is not much, but something. My question is, "Does anyone know of a great advocate willing to help me out here??......in the area of Toronto?"

Hello,

Welcome to the WrongPlanet Forum.

Being in a major metro-area, there must be agencies that have had extensive experience regarding advocacy, and advisors for adults with Aspergers.

Seek-out agencies that’ve been established the longest; hence most likely to have a diverse range of Asperger adults, as well as "being ahead of the curve on Aspergers adult issues so to speak."

Many agencies are a confederation of volunteers e.g., an agency's 'Board of Directors.' Many agencies host monthly face-to-face meetings; hence meetings are the best opportunities to develop support networks and action-plans.

My thread 'What if 'Self Advocacy Alone' is not Enough??' may also be of interest.

Best wishes.

Thank you. I will check it out. I have some work related legal matters... I can't face even a lawyer (that I can't afford) on my own. They put on the pressure and I shut down....get confused, etc. I see it as a situation where..... My win is a win for all on the Spectrum. SO HELP ME ! !!

Sooo.... About that lawyer I retained. I received a letter today saying she was dropping my case. Apparently, I was under the impression that my managers contributed to my burn-out. ?? This alarmed her. ?? I'm sorry, is it because I'm a Aspie or am I just stupid or should they warn you to have lawyer sitting beside you when you fill out basic questions for company insurance? Urgh!!

I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but if you are aware of a willing, credible advocate in the Toronto area.....please just let me know how to get in touch.....specifically. All these sites and links and threads are making me crazier. I'm just getting dead ends.....for advocacy for adult women.....

Hello,

I feel the same frustrations too! Don't let the series of "dead-ends" get you down! Awareness for the needs to Asperger adults continues to (abliet slowly) grow!

As mentioned in my previous post, agencies with a good track record in a major metro area will have that diversity of clientle; hence experience that has that "six-degrees of separation" which may be of help!

Have you considered the Asperger Society of Ontario? They have had experience with adults. Check their calender of events.

Best wishes, don't get discouraged!

Yes. I played phone tag with them for a couple of weeks then sent an email.....again (we don't do that) and here's a list of places to look. One being this site......which I was already on. I know I sound ungrateful....its just that I go at it for a few hrs and come up with nothing. I am now going to see another lawyer tmo, without advocacy.....hopefully they have some understanding and I present myself in a way that they can understand the problem. This is why an advocate would be quite beneficial. Thanks for your encouragement though. I'll keep looking.

I never did find one. I did retain a new lawyer on contigency though. Hopefully I can stay afloat so I can come through this and start it myself. There certainly is a lot left to be desired in this area.
