What "icons" of your generation do you think are over-hyped?

In my case (born early 50s) these 2 stick out:

1.) US President John F. Kennedy (not my generation, but I am old enough to recall when he was elected and assassinated).
2.) Woodstock (mainstream media here in the US are "celebrating" this ad nauseam which inspired this post).

The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
Led Zepplin
The Who

There was a lot of third-tier talent that was still worth listening to. Some were only “One-Hit Wonders”, but that one hit (IMHO) expressed a talent that surpassed any “Top-40” Rock & Roll band. If only the major music labels had coddled and encouraged the “One-Hit Wonders” as much as they did the so-called ‘legends’ of Rock & Roll.

All of those Live Aid, Band Aid, Farm Aid and the like charity music festivals (not just overhyped, but didn't do anything to help their intended charities and even made matters worse).

I would agree with pretty much all of the names on this list.

This sort of thing was so typical of the 80s, exactly why I don't know. I never contributed a red cent to any of them. Along the same lines, I am suspicious of all corporate-style charity campaigns (Stand Up to Cancer, for example). I can't believe much of the money actually goes to help people. At least when you give money to a panhandler, you know you're helping that person, whether or not you agree with how they'll choose to spend it.

Wow music of the 80s and 90s is really taking it on the chin here.

I agree with the Princess Diana thing though. I'm a die-hard member of Team Camilla if there ever was one.

But you can't condemn people for listening to music they like. Millions of people thoroughly enjoy listening to all four singing groups you identified. They certainly have a right to enjoy it if they want.
