I was just wondering how common it is for people with Asperger's to have ADHD? I am forty now and one of my work colleagues think I may have ADHD. I was very grateful for this observation and I am going to get it checked out. I have often felt that my Asperger's alone doesn't adequately explain some of the problems I have socially and how people react to me. Is it possible that a person could live till forty years old without ADHD being picked up? Some people say that even if a person doesn't have ADHD as a formal diagnosis, most people with Autism have some traits. How true is this in your opinion?

Thanks for you help guys!

i was dx at age 43 with aspergers. i was previously dx with adhd/pi, depression, and anxiety. now i am the recipient of all 4 dx. actually doing better now that we are treating the adhd symptoms along with depression as in the past it was one or the other with poor results. also putting things into the aspergers context has really helped me find better coping strategies.

people with aspergers are more likely to have these other dx than the general public. sometimes they can mask each other and sometimes they can stay hidden depending how a person presents.

hope that helps

You certainly can have both conditions at the same time. Getting a good diagnosis and proper treatment should, in theory, give you the best outcome.
