Does it make you feel better after you've had a rant about something that bothers you or do you feel it increases your feeling of anger or frustration?

You need a "depends" option. If it's something really stupid or trivial, ranting can make it inflated, worse. If it's something that has been gnawing at me and I needed to get it out, I can lift a terrible burden off my chest by ranting. And set it free.

Sometimes I get caught up in things and lose perspective on just how important it is to get angry over something stupid.

I saw a TV program in which a doctor studying relationships makes the hypothesis that those that keep talking will stay together those that withdrawal (even if its just one party) will tend to separate. So that suggest ranting is good. :)

Here is an article that says complaining makes you feel worse.
I should have put a depends option in the poll.

Well, I can't decide! I do (rarely) rant and sometimes it does feel good to get the anger out, but if it's directed at someone, then once the ranting's over I usually wish I'd kept my lid on. But if it's a rant about something that is extremely irritating, it can lead to a quieter discussion, when the dust settles, where things do actually change "NOW I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION! HEY - THERE IS A PROBLEM!" But, I'm not sure it's particularly good for the blood pressure. :)
