No, I'm not fifty something years old wishing to be younger. I'm actually eighteen. But here's the thing: I'm much more mature than most other eighteen year olds. When people talk to me, they're always quite impressed about how proper, mature, and wise I am compared to everyone else my age. I look younger (about fourteen tops), but I act a lot older. And then when I'm around other eighteen year olds, I always feel so above them due to their immature behavior. So what's going on? Am I missing out on having a lot of fun for my age or am I simply mature is all?

Funny thing. I was pretty much like
that, when younger. Now look at me. :P

It's a bit of both. Being mature means missing
out on some fun. But maybe not wanting it.
It took me a long time to learn fun.

Maybe in another 20 years, I'll settle down
again, and be an adult. Doubt it though.

I just started becoming like this sort of recently. I believe I was about fifteen when I really started noticing how many stupid and pointless (and non-legal) activities most teens indulge in. I'd really rather not be a part of that kind of stuff or hang out with those types. Also, even though most people think I'm extremely mature for my age (which I am), my mom still thinks I'm very immature!

It may be difficult right now, but as you get older, people tend to not worry about the age gap so much.

It seems to me that once a person passes their mid-20's, they are just as likely to associate with people 10 yrs older than themselves as people their own age.

It also depends on interests, maturity, etc.

You might be able to find social groups with a mix of ages, genders, and intellects.
Sometimes it's a book group, or a group that meets to discuss current issues (my wife's father has been in one of those for years).

Of course. And you are, in a lot of ways,
I'm sure. Things that show more at home.

Hell, my wife left home at 16, and had
to fend for herself. She became quite a
tough nut, going to school, and holding
down a job to support herself.

Moved in with me at 17, and many times,
she was like a little girl. I loved her for that
contradiction. Just as I could always debate
reasonably, yet still run off sulking, when I
didn't get my way.

Just part of being aspie.

I went through this, especially when I was 10-13. It will even out as you get older.

I think some people are 'old' when they're young and get younger as they get older, if that makes sense. :)

I was never a teenager. I went straight from childhood to being an adult.
Sometimes I do regret never having done teenager type stuff. eg being a uni student, going to parties and clubs etc, schoolies, contiki holidays. then I look at all the cheesy little teeny boppers out there and thank the gods I never did that.

Sounds like you are just very mature for your age, so don't be hard on yourself. I was like that too my entire childhood. I distinctly remember in third grade thinking how immature my classmates were making fun of each other and fighting and I wondered how long I would have to wait till they matured so I could have friends.

Now I'm 38 and I'm still waiting for others to mature. I know even someone in their 60's who I can no longer hangout with because she is too immature. But generally speaking I like people in their 50's and 60's to have as friends. Except there are several people in their 20's at work that I think are very cool and am quite impressed with their maturity level.

I don't think it evens out as you get older. I'm 50, and it drives me to tears some of the childish things people waste their time talking about. I keep wishing that they would mind the important things, and quit worrying that methane deposits under Siberia will destroy the atmosphere!! !

Prof_Pretorius I haven't seen you on here in ages! How you been? I agree with you. How I long for deep conversations. But if I bring up anything other than local news they roll their eyes because its subjects they have never heard of. Only I can make a rockhound shake his head talking about sidewalk fulgarites.

I'm quite well, thanks. Between gainful employment right now, but looking about ...

It strikes me as very odd the things people rattle on about. Personally, I'd love to have a conversation regarding a granitic outcrop, or basalt with quartz protusions.

I'd love to hear conversation on basalt with quartz protrusions. You should PM me. I want pictures if you've got them! I have a quartz, calcite, halite & fulgarite fetish you know.

You should start a new thread to talk about rocks, minerals etc.

Around these parts, most people call granodiorite, granite

Nice to bump into you Prof (and of course you too Lolanator!)

I mix with a lot of old farts in an Old School association (yeah I know  ). But apart from being less supple and less physically active, I don't think they are any more or less mature than when they were in their teens. And I can easily imagine what they would have been like at school. So Lolanator, I think could be the woman you are and will always be. :D

When I was 18, I wanted to be 25. Now I am 48, I still want to be 25. I don't feel any different.
