I have writen a book about my life but I don't know if it is worth bothering to try and get published. I've asked so-called knowledgable people to help me but so far not much interest so I am interested if a couple of people here can read what I've put together and tell me honestly if I should even try to actually publish anything.

Well I'm a fast reader, got a link or something?
I'm also a kind of picky reader, so if it doesn't grab me I won't be able to get through it.

I can't figure out to post a link to your reply in the PM area here so send me a regular email if you can as I know how to attach a document to a message.
Thanks for your patience

Okay, what the hell.
Even if it turns out to not be my thing, I'll still read enough to give you an opinion.

Sounds cool. I've tossed around the idea myself from time to time, not to publish one, but maybe just put it together for my son.

it's always worth publishing, maybe if you get a few negative responses you should hire a good editor (or maybe you know someone who'd do a decent job with it) to make it more marketable.

Temple Grandin's first book had to be heavily edited but later she got real good with writing and look at her now, heh?

good luck!

(let us know if you succed, I might want a little signed copy lol)

I love reading, and would be really interested to read it, and tell you my thoughts - although I'm also a picky reader, so if it doesn't interest me, I also might not read the whole thing. But I'd still read enough to give you some feedback.

Hi garyww,

I just found your post and I'm happy to see that you've written a book. As far as I'm concerned, we need more autobiographies from people on the spectrum. Especially since the spectrum is so broad. I would be pleased to read it and give you a book review.

Sharing our experiences will not only benefit us but will create better awareness. There are many good books out there written by health professionals but nothing compares to real life experiences. Giving health professionals a sneak peek into our minds could help them develop better strategies for our children - for our future. You might want to get a contributor to add to your book. Maybe a brief synopsis from a specialist in the field or even a book review. You could send a copy of your manuscript to Tony Attwood for example.

It can often take years to publish a manuscript. Many best selling authors receive between 20 to 100 rejection letters from publishing companies. The important thing is not to give up. I wish you the best.

Gary,

There's this place online that you can have books printed as they are ordered. Its one way to get over trying to get published. If someone wants the book then they print it for them. Actually I think there are several places like that possibly including Amazon. I knew a professor who has 8 books on Amazon but none were technically published.

Thanks for the tips. I already self publish other specialty books but this was my first about autism. I had that in mind as a fall back.

I have heard that the best way to find a potential publisher is to go to a library/book store and find publishers with similar books already published, then research which ones accept submissions without an agent and go from there.

I have a list of publishers but just wanted to know if the material even warranted being considered to be released. There are a ton of AS books out there and for the most part they are similar and I didn't want to just do another AS biography thing.

I wrote a book about life with AS a couple of years ago but publishers just weren't interested - "Too many similar books out there"...apparently. In the end I ended up self publishing. OK didn't sell a vast number but those people who did buy and read it seemed to enjoy it.
